I have an box of .41 Magnum bullets in lead SWC. Before I fire them, is it the old police load or just something Georgia Arms loaded with a lead bullet?
Your openion, please

When it was introduced , there were 2 basic factory loads for the .41 Mag.

Remington , Winchester and PMC all offered the so-called 'police load' a 210gr lead SWC at approx. 950fps.

The other load was the 'sporting load' of a 210gr JSP or JHP at 1350fps.

Are they in a box...as in a factory box? If not an easy way to tell is that the original Remington and Winchester 210 lead Police Load was a soft swagged bullet of SWC design...if it will scratch with a fingernail it is the original loads.

GA and most any other custom loader would use cast bullets that are generally much harder...and lead less...than the original loads. The surface hardness usually with defeat a light pass with a finger nail...

Lemme get this straight -- are you saying you have some loads and you have no idea whether they are some yahoo's hand-grenade reloads or GA factory reloads? If so, how do you expect US to know??

My friend, you are free to shoot them up if you wish, but I would not, nor would I recommend anyone else do it, without knowing where they came from. I'd either pull the bullets and reuse the brass, or throw them away. You're on your own.

You haven't provided enough information to make a safe and informed decision about the ammo. If you do not know the origin of the ammo, do as Pisgah has advised, DO NOT SHOOT IT!

Even if you do know that it was handloaded by someone other than a licensed manufacturer, it is not advisable to shoot them. I have loaded thousands of rounds and fired them, but there is very few people I trust enough to shoot their reloads. Very few of my friends would shoot my reloads either. It's just not a good idea.

Pics of the loaded rounds, specefically the bullets and several headstamps, as well as the box, would help.
