Can I toss around a hand grenade or two?

Just because Roy said someplace that was the first one, it doesn't always mean a whole lot. That first one may have shipped months after adjoining guns were shipped and sold at retail.

There is also no guarantee that even if the first one out the door was the stated gun, the numbers 2 or 3 higher may have been a completely different model. In the prewar that was a problem because most Ks were in one number sequence, and most Ns were in another. Sometimes the first run of guns were all in a consecutive group of numbers, but then the next group were much higher.

One of the problems S&W collectors run into is that we try to use logic to make some assumptions where there was no logic or consistency involved.

Dick,
You are correct. that was the first one manufactured, but not the first one shipped. the first one shipped was a later serial number.
