Headed for Texas in a few weeks

well

My grandson & his girlfriend are moving to Austin in a few weeks.
Anything I should tell him about the area?
He does have a few gun's I gave him....

Welcome to Texas, I really hope ya'll have a good time here.

Its nick name here is Mosscow on The River. Major liberal city. My youngest son lives there.... yes he is a liberal.

As Lobo said... them folks do drive crazy in Austin. I might add Houston and San Antonio to that list. The Austin area is Texas' silly-con valley. Libs from every blue state live there now.

If in Austin, Franklins is the best BBQ. Between Austin and Fredericksburg is our wine country.... the wife and I have had some very good times in The Hill Country region.

Oh, I disagree with Yoda on one thing, if you want, open carry is just fine by most folks here and that includes me.

I don't really find Austin traffic all that bad as far as the aggressiveness of drivers there. It's worse than San Antonio, though.

Then again, I'm used to the crazy drivers out here in Midland-Odessa. Ten inches off your rear bumper is the "norm" here. We have the highest traffic fatality rate per capita of anywhere in Texas, so the state highway dept. claims. I believe it. Craziness and hyper aggressiveness abound here. I do my best not to take part in the insanity, but it often sneaks up on you.

Yeah, open carry is okay by me as well. I see some one (other than myself) open carrying infrequently, but nobody freaks out about it. In Texas we can't carry in hospitals, courthouses, or anyplace with a legally posted 30.06 (no concealed carry) or 30.07 (no open carry) sign at the entrance. Those are mostly found at banks and Dr. offices. The only place I go now and then that has a 30.07 sign is HEB. They're okay with concealed, though. Restaurants that derive 51% or more of their revenue from alcohol sales are required to post the sign outlawing carry there as well. If there's no sign you can assume you're good to go. You're even free to carry in the state capitol, and you get to avoid the metal detector everyone else has to go through by going to the special entrance for licensed carriers. By the way, the line there is much shorter than the regular line, too.

I noticed a sign at WalMart the other day that said something like "It is illegal to carry a firearm in this store without a license." Well, yeah. Same as everywhere else in the state unless we ever get "Constitutional carry" passed.

I am in the process of writing a book about our US road trip last year. Last night I was writing about the drive from Luckbach to Austin and mentioned those very wineries around Johnson City.

Pity though that I didn’t have the info about all those great barbecue places while we were there. I developed a taste for US barbecue, especially brisket, that I have just not been able to satisfy since our return. Manuka wood chips just do not give the same flavour. I really need to find a source for hickory.

As for the book, don’t know if it’ll ever be published but I wanted to record our experiences for the future.

you will find that a majority of the really good bbq joints in Texas use Oak rather than Hickory. Pecan is also excellent, but i'd choose Oak. if you can get a copy of Aaron Franklin's book on bbq he has an excellent section on the wood he uses. i consider Franklin's book the Bible of Texas bbq. he also has some utube videos that are worthwhile watching. you really should spend a considerable amount of time roaming around Central Texas just for the bbq experience. i'm posting a picture of the wood lot at Snow's BBQ in Lexington. Kruez Market in Lockhart has a wood lot 3-4 times that size.

This place is real close to Azle and worth a stop. They have a new restaurant opening in White Settlement real soon. They usually sell out everyday, so go early. Ask for the "brisket burnt ends" it is unbelievable.

Heim BBQ & Catering

White Settlement?
One of my old tromping grounds!
But never went to Azle.
The Honky Tonks were up on the Jacksboro Highway.

I truly hope y'all had a good time in Texas, thanks for coming and hope you get to return some day.

If you have a variety of Oak where you are from it does well with smoked meats. Cherry and pear are pretty good as well especially with pork, chicken and fish.

Did y'all get to visit any of the wineries? I hope so.

We enjoyed texas so much we ended up in the state three times in five weeks :D:D:D and it was mostly down to the forum members we met while there (and in other places too).

Right now the plan is to return again in 2021 for my 60th birthday celebrations. As long as I can work out the finances we will be there from mid May through to early July.

We do have several varieties of oak here. Pecan not so much but pear wood should also be available.
