Health and Fitness Thread

We're back from the Y. Now their scale tells me that I'm at 172. Well, I have been eating a little closer to "normal" for the last coupla days.
We had a good hour long workout. I've increased my workout weights on a coupla machines.
Then it was off to the warm indoor pool.
I'm gonna hit the diet hard again on Monday. Hopefully I can finally get below 170 and stay there.
From what I've read, since I'm 5' 8" tall, 170's still overweight.

Tomorrow we're gonna head back to the Y for spin class, ab work, a few laps on the indoor track then the indoor warm pool.

See attached chart from the "experts."

Ideal Body Weight For Men

I got in a 5.75 mile walk this morning and will probably get in another three or so doing errands today. Five weeks of exercise and diet finally got my weight down to what it was 30 years ago, when I was 30. The age adjusted BMI calculator that BCC posted indicates I'm in a good spot, but I still have a fat butt. I really do not know what the perfect weight for me will be at this point in my life. I know I do not want to be 168 pounds. My plan now is to keep physically active and slowly trim down until I'm happy with how I look and feel. I figure that will probably be somewhere between 182 and 185 pounds. I was that weight in my mid-20s, but I was young then. My blood pressure last night was 113/67 with a resting pulse rate of 48. What was once out of control BP with meds is good BP without meds. Maybe I have a few more good years left in me now. :)

I've found this chart helpful as a reference point.

This chart works much better for me.. when I first got married, I was 180 lbs. Top of the weight chart for my large frame size according to WHO. I was skin and bones and my ribcage stuck out. At 200 to 210 lbs I was at me best weight and fitness...I am a little over 230 right now and according to the WHO charts I am morbidly obese. This chart makes more sense. I'm over weight, but not obese.....now, you guys are motivating me...my wife isn't able to exercise as much as I need to, so starting today I'm going to do more and try and get back under 220......wish me luck, drifters...did I just use that word?

We went camping this weekend and stayed very busy walking. I also got up early on Sunday and took a 4 mile run through the campground loops. Great job everyone.

That's why I started this thread. There were some fellow drifters that were interested in improving their health and fitness levels. After the drift thread was closed, I kinda figured we could have our own thread to encourage and discuss our triumphs and challenges.

By the way, good luck!

We just went to spin class at the Y today then hung out at the warm pool for a while.
After Yesterdays workout, the 19 mile bike trip the day before and the 10 mile hike the day before that, we felt like taking it a bit easy today.
Tomorrow, there's gonna be a lot of time spent hiking around on the mountain.

Until I started tracking my caloric intake, I had no idea how much good food I could eat on a 1,300 calorie daily regimen. I'm convinced my success this summer is directly connected to a higher level of awareness of my intake and output.

Up and going but not moving very fast, put a kink in my back Sunday working on my garage door. I have messed it up periodically over the years but I overdid it getting my door repaired without any help. You forget to act your age and something will remind you! Have a good day all.

Got up for my morning run. Pushed myself today to see what I could do. Finally a sub 30 5K according to my phone app. My Garmin watch said I needed to run longer to get to 3.1 miles so I ran until it said I was done and I ran that in 31:01. Either way I was happy with my run and it felt great.

Keep going folks!

you guys are all doing great.
i'm proud of you.
i'm hoping some will be brave enow to report in 6 months.
losing weight is one thing.
keeping it off is the problem.
what people really need are tips for doing that.

I started on my exercise and diet program about two years ago. This time last year I weighed between 197 and 202 pounds. That was down from a high of about 280 or so. A year later, after a five week conscious effort to get to my old goal weight of 190 pounds, I'm at 190 pounds this morning. The exercise has become a life style. My walk from a year ago compared to my walk from this morning. Logging my food into myfitnesspal made losing the last few pounds a lot simpler. I figure I'll be logging my food and exercising for years to come. I'm not planning on giving up any time soon.

The weight will only stay off if a lifestyle change is made. I've become a huge fan of the FitBit. As I document every incoming calorie, I know what I've got to do in terms of calorie burn to maintain or lose weight. It took me 58 years on the planet to make the simple observation that I alone am responsible for meeting and maintaining my goals. My continued good health is important enough to me to have decided I want to treat myself as respectfully as I was raised to treat others.

PS: Ditto to what kwselke said above and kudos to him on his achievement!

PPS: Thank you snubby for starting this excellent thread.

My lower back's a wasteland. It goes from hurting some to hurting lots. It's from a lifetime of working in warehouses, factories and being young and stupid.

You're welcome.

I started the day off with a 7 mile walk. Toss in walking to the ATM, store, and gym I walked a bit over 12 miles today plus spent about 35 minutes in my little community gym.

I've been thinking about BMI, goal weight, and ideal weight. My current 190 pounds is what I weighed when I was 30 and in the best physical condition of my life. I set that weight as my goal to have a goal and figuring that is the right weight for me. Here I am at 60, at the goal I set, and I'm not 30 and in the best physical condition of my life. A light bulb came on after reading and thinking about yesterday's posts.

Edit: I love this myfitnesspal app. What's not to like about a calorie counting app that allows for a malt beverage category?
When I was in my 20s I was the same height I am now 6' 1.5". My weight varied between a low of about 172 and a high of about 192. When I was running a lot I wanted my weight as low as possible, then I got into scuba diving a bit more weight helped. I judged my weight by how I felt, I looked, and how my clothes fit. If I was flabby I tried to lose fat. If I was weak I tried to gain strength. I'm pleased to have achieved my made up weight goal, but I want to be in better shape. I may weigh 190 or 180 when I get to that goal. I'll just have to keep trying and find out.
