Health and Fitness Thread

Today's hike was a lot less "moist" than my last hike. Then again I didn't get caught in a thunder storm this time.
Just a beautiful warm sunny day.
I ended up going 5.42 miles and it reached 96 degrees.
The gooder news is that the erosion ditches have been filled and the fallen trees cleared away.

After all the beer I had on Saurday, I was kinda wondering what today's trip to the gym was gonna be like.
Turned out pretty good.
I did change one thing. Usually, I'll warm up on the chest press machine with less weight than my workout weight. Today though, it was occupied and since I've been thinking of using the Smith machine for chest work, I'd go ahead and set it up.
I already use it for shoulder presses.
Anyway, used it today for both my chest and shoulders.
I was always reluctant to use the equipment in the free weight area, figuring that area was for the real bodybuilders and weight lifters.
Then I figured that at my last fitness assessment, since my physique rating went from "thin and muscular" to "very muscular," maybe I am one of those people.
Anyway, tomorrow's looking real good for a nice hike on a sunny mountain trail.
Just gotta make sure to get my protein.
"Just gotta make sure to get my protein."

Hello snubbyfan,

I very much admire your tenacity and diligence to your health and work out routines.

How many grams of protein are you consuming per day, per week?

Is there a particular time of day that you are targeting your protein supplements?

Is Creatine included in your supplements – if so, how many grams per day?

What is the source of the proteins – plant or animal, and in what foods do you prefer?

Are you supplementing any specific amino acids?

Thank you.

I don't subscribe to the "one gram of protein for every one pound of bodyweight" that people like to recommend.
Rather I follow the one gram of protein for every kilogram of lean body mass.
That means at 166 pounds and 10.5% bodyfat, my lean mass is 148.57 pounds or 67.39 kilograms which is 67.39 grams of protein.
That being said, I don't track each gram, I just eat mindfully.
That means lotsa chicken breast, pork, ground bison, high protein pasta with high protein turkey balls, stuff like that.
I rarely eat out and no fast food ever unless it's either that or starve.
On an activity day such as a gym day, hiking or biking, I'll supplement with a protein drink. Usually right after the activity then a high protein supper. Usually another protein drink the next morning.
For protein drinks I use "Gold Standard" protein powder with one cup of skim milk. That comes to 32 grams of protein and 200 calories.
I take 5 grams of creatine monohydrate powder with 1 cup of water daily in the morning.
I also make sure to get clean(ish) carbs and "good" fats while keeping in mind that carbs and fats are generally calorie dense.
No fad diets. I just endeavor to eat healthy while being mindful of my protein intake.

I had an interesting thought this morning.
When my motor nerve condition started in 2011, I spent years getting bounced around to different neurologists and neuromuscular specialists. My activity level dropped to near zero and by 2015 my weight ballooned to over 230 pounds. Fortunately, there was nothing they could do to help. One neurologist told Lisa and I that the only thing that would help would be physical therapy.
Basically, resistance training and cardio.
We joined the YMCA in Cumberland and in 2020, we joined the gym in Romney. By then I was 140 pounds and 14% bodyfat.
I had some loose baggy skin and decided to try filling it with lean mass. My goal was 155 pounds and around 10% bodyfat. After I hit that, I made a new goal of 165 pounds at around 10% bodyfat. I made that goal last month.
Now my goal's 170 lean pounds.
This morning I was 168 pounds and it struck me as interesting that my first weight loss goal is now my weight gain goal. 'Cept a lot leaner.

You are a lean, mean, protein-eating, power machine! :)

The human body is an incredibly amazing self-generating organism..... it takes maintenance and you just have to give it a chance to perform.

Dunno if it was the weather, the chicken and rice I had for supper last night, the cookies and donuts I was "forced" to eat when I visited my mother on Saturday or if the gravity was a little bit lower today but the weights seemed just a bit lighter at the gym today. In fact I had to add some weight to stay in my desired rep range.
Guess I'll find out at my next gym trip this Thursday.
I'm planning a nice hike for tomorrow.

Had a pretty good gym day today. I did havta increase my weights again over on the Smith machine for shoulder presses but I figure that since I had just recently started doing those that it's just newbie gains.
I also decided to start doing supported t bar rows. I haven't seen many people doing them so that station is usually open.
I figured that would go well with lat pull downs.

Nice hike today. 5.16 miles and it got up to 100 sunny degrees.
Got a really good workout yesterday and woke up a bit sore today.
On Wednesday I went for a hike that turned out to be exactly 5 miles.
Tuesday was a day of mixed feelings. I brought my truck to Malloy Toyota for it's new vehicle scheduled maintenance and to check to see why my A/C doesn't work.
The good news is they found a leak in the high side line and ordered a replacement part. I already have an appointment to get it repaired and it's all covered under warrenty.
I don't often use A/C but it has less than 14,000 miles and everything should work and work well.
The bad, really bad news was after I got home. That's when I learned that Ozzy had passed.
I'll probably go and visit my mother tomorrow.
Sunday I'm thinking of relaxing in the sun with a good cigar.

For today's workout, I decided to change things around a bit. I'm using the same weights just doing the exercises in a different order. I'm still doing my isolations last though.
Will it make a difference? Probably not but it'll make things a bit more interesting.
Cooler weather on the way for next week. Biking and shooting range weather.

Hot steamy day for a hike today. It was literally like a sauna in the direct sunlight.
I actually kinda liked it although I do gotta admit that I cranked up the A/C in my truck on the way home.
I ended up going 5.48 miles.
Gym day tomorrow and Friday's looking good for a bike ride.

I call this bike Wonderbike. It has pedal assist so I can push myself as hard as I feel like and just push a button and it'll assist me in getting back home. Whenever I ride it, I wonder how far I'm gonna go this time.

Anyway, the weather was cloudy and in the upper 60's to lower 70's and I decided to see how far Wonderbike would take me today.
I ended up going 29.32 miles.

How long does it take you to go 29.32 miles on your Wonderbike?

Interesting gym day today. I had decided to stop doing drop sets after my last set just to see what would happen.
What happened was my weight went up 2 pounds to 170 and my reps also increased.
Could it be that those extra drop sets were just enough to over do it and not allow enough recovery time or was it just the bison stroganoff?
Anyway, I guess I'll eventually find out.
My next reassessment's on the first day of Autumn.
Planning on a nice hike in the sun tomorrow.

My delta of actual measured body weight is about 4 lbs. - 2 lbs. either way.
I believe the deviation from an average weekly normal weight has more to do with my hydration, or lack of.
Water weighs 8.34 lbs. per gallon. 2 quarts of water weighs 4.17 lbs.

Wonderful day for a hike today. I ended up going exactly 5.0 miles. The temperatures up on the mountain Ridge got up to 104 Sunny degrees. They've been doing some work on the trail. The detour signs are mostly gone and there are blue blazes painted on the trees. The only detour signs that are still left are the ones that are actually on the detour.
