Funny, just got an email from Brownells asking me to contact legislators on this. They gave a link from the American Suppressors Association that will contact your representatives.

Support the Hearing Protection Act

I saw that too and filled it out to send to mine. My rep is on the house judiciary committee but he is about as worthless as any who have served or currently serve - Steve Cohen D - TN, but I sent it anyway.

That would be a great thing for congress to vote for. They would finally do something good up there. And my hearing would be saved.

And he replied - basically saying he is going to vote against it, but in a nice way of course!

Dear Mr. XXXXXX

Thank you for contacting me regarding H.R. 367, the Hearing Protection Act. As a supporter of both the Second Amendment and sensible gun control measures that increase public safety, I appreciate your concern for this issue.

Protecting the Second Amendment rights of Americans has long been a priority of mine as a public servant. I believe that responsible Americans should be able to make the decision about whether or not owning and carrying a firearm is the right choice for them and their families. While I respect the constitutional right to carry firearms, I am also concerned by the availability of firearm suppressors should the Hearing Protection Act become law.

As you know, H.R. 367 is a bill that would amend the Internal Revenue Code to remove a transfer tax on firearm suppressors and remove them from the purview of the National Firearms Act of 1934. This would allow for the availability of unregulated firearm suppressors across the United States. Currently, firearm suppressors are legal in the State of Tennessee for citizen use and the process required to legally obtain a firearm suppressor allows the freedom for responsible expression of the Second Amendment while keeping these products out of the hands of those who would use them illegally. Please be assured that I will continue to follow the Hearing Protection Act, and I will keep your thoughts in mind as I do.

It is important to me to hear the views of my constituents. Please feel free to contact me at any time in the future to voice your opinions on issues before Congress. If you are in need of assistance with Social Security, Medicare, FHA, the VA or other federal agencies, please click here for more information.

As always, I remain.
Most sincerely,

Steve Cohen
Member of Congress

You might want to explain to Mr Cohen that given the increased weight, length and lack of concealability, suppressors have ever been popular with criminals - outside the movies at least.

You might also want to point out that suppressors are not hard to build. And criminals, who do not care about filling out a Form 1, or paying the tax stamp, could readily make one if they wanted one.

This law will not make suppressors more accessible to criminals, who don't use them anyway.
