Hello from Argentina

Hi, there!
I'm Esteban, from Buenos Aires, Argentina.
My first handgun ever, back in 1988, was a Hand Ejector .38 Special; a few years later i graduated to a 686. Since then, i've been shooting several S&W revolvers and pistols.
I'm kind of a guns history freak, too... so, i guess i'm in the right forum to keep learning.
I thank you all in advance for sharing your knowledge with me.
Hola, Esteban. Como le va?

Welcome to the forum!

My first carry gun was a Bersa Thunder 380, from your wonderful country. It still gets a lot of use. Beautiful piece of work.

Bienvenido Tocayo! I have been to Argentina many times for the sugar cane industry, usually Tucuman, via Buenos Aires, a beautiful city. I enjoyed it very much.
Steve
Gracias, Steve! Tucumán, we call it the Republic's Garden.

Thank you, Tiger 11! Bersa is by far, the most important private firearms factory. But now it has its main production line in the USA.

What are the gun laws like there?
There is a strict register system, but as long as you are a law abiding citizen, without criminal record, you can have as many guns (rifles, shotguns, handguns) as you can hoard. No full autos, thank you.
The problem is that taxes, importers fees, etc. make them quite expensive, compared to US price tags (about 100% more).

Welcome Esteban. I have been to BA many times as Telegraphist on the SS Delta Mar, 1978-1983.

So sorry! I forgot to explain that only FMJ or LRN are legal for self defense. Absolute nonsense, of course. But it´s an aging law dating back to early 70s when terrorist groups were at their peak. I hope the present administration will see that it is replaced by much modern ideas on the matter.

Cape Farewell? That's a good looking lady
When Delta Lines went belly-up, MARAD reclaimed the SS Delta Mar and refitted it as shown and renamed Cape Farewell. She was one of 17 LASH (Lighter Aboard Ship) vessels made. They carried 60-foot barges and about 100 containers. The idea was to service ports without container crains plus carry outsized cargo. They would anchor and drop barges off the stern which would then be towed ashore. Delta had three of these ships, Farrel lines had one which I also sailed on, SS Austral Lightning. We made voyages from the west coast to Hawaii, Samoa, New Zealand, Australia, Tasmania, New Guinea then return via Van Couver, British Columbia. One of the original 17 was operated by a German company and was lost in the North Atlantic. I sailed for 8 years, 1975 to 1983.
