Hello from Sydney....

Hi guys.....

New to shooting here.... Been shooting with a club for a little while here in Sydney and wanted to own a gun for a long time. I paid a deposit for a brand new 686 but changed my mind at the last minute and finally acquired a 386 7 shot in 6" barrel yesterday....

Being an engineer in my past life I can appreciate the aircraft grade Aluminium Scandium alloy reducing the weight of the gun from 1250 grams to only 851 grams and the fiber optic fore sight is really great to focus on. Best part was it only cost me another $40 on top of the 686. But I have been reading mixed reviews about it.... Haven't had the chance the chance to fire the gun yet... Will do it next Sunday.....

Any body using this gun for target practice can I have your opinion on my decision and any tips for upkeep of the gun....

Where do you shoot mate?

Sorry I can't help you with information about the 386 I have a 586 in 6" and a 686 that I have to pick up once my PTA arrives.

Personally I like the heavier guns better due to the fact that they reduce the recoil a bit better and it helps me realign the sights which is convenient for timed stages. Lighter guns can still be as good and accurate but they usually better for carry, which we are not allowed to do. But being a 6" it may not feel front heavy like the steel ones.

What disciplines/matches are you shooting?

Nah mate. VICPOL is now using M&P in .40

The revolvers are being sold in the USA by Bud's. The police traded the old revolvers for the new pistols and some people in this forum has bought some of the old model 10 and they came in M&P's boxes.

thanks for the welcome.....

I shoot with the Prison Officers Pistol Club out at Windsor..... We normally shoot modified Police Service matches..... Club is not very strict on match rules as we use an array of ammunition varying from .22 to .357 mags..... 686 being the most common weapon......

686 is in very short supply and can get upto 4-5 months to get as per my gun dealer so I went in and had a look at a 586 and the dealer showed me this 386.... It was an impulsive decision..... It is a relatively new weapon and I have read mixed reviews of this gun so put it on the forum.......

I like taking risky decisions..... When 4 Door Wranglers came into the market the hard core TJ fans wrote it off.... now it is classed as the best 4wd in its range. And I own one....

I was in Melbourne about 3 years back and they were still using model 10s but changed later on..... We in NSW Prisons still use S&W Model 10 and Ruger PC9 Carbines.. Changing soon to Ruger Mini14 ......

Cant wait for the Sunday.... I got an advice to use light rounds so got 2 boxes of Winchester Hollow points 125 grain.... Hope it doesnt kick as bad as some of the heavier rounds....

I am still a novice in the shooting game so please correct my mistakes and guide me.....

If it is a blued version then they are not too hard to find but if you are looking for a stainless, forget about finding one unless you want to pay a lot of money. Marlin 1894css are going for well over $1200+ on Gun Broker so be prepared to pay some extra dough if you want to have it in stainless if you can find one.

Welcome to the forum. I taught an armorers course at the New South Wales Police Dept in the early 90's. Beautiful police dept and a great bunch of guys.The guy that hosted the school was Gary Collaby. He's in exporting/importing there in Sydney. Don't know if he's still alive. Anyway enjoy your shooting its a lot fun.

G'day, Mite!
So you have a 386 XL Hunter. Scandium frame and stainless cylinder. I suspect that you also have a barrel sleeve in stainless or carbon steel.
With a 6" barrel it should work for target shooting, and at 30 ounces it should be easier to carry in the field than a fully steel gun.
I wouldn't want to fire many full power magnum loads in it in one sitting. They are hard on your hand even with a 38 ounce gun.
Keep it clean as you would with an all steel gun, be careful not to scratch off the coating on the scandium. Before storage, wipe it down with a rust inhibitor such as Birchwood Casey Barricade or similar product.
I think you have a great gun, there. Congratulations.
