Hello to all from the coal fields of WV. I will soon be buying my first handgun, and my first S&W. In doing research online I came across this site, and have been browsing it for a couple days now. Figured it was time to register and learn all I can. I am looking into getting a sigma, either a 9 or 40, cant really decide. I am probably going to be buying it from Buds, seems to be cheapest place I can find. Local shop wants almost $100 more for the 9. Anyone have any advice for a newbie? Any and all will be greatly appreciated. I look forward to my time here, and cant wait to get my gun. :)

Greetings from Maine. Welcome aboard! :) What are you looking at for a 9mm? My advice would be to look at purchasing a 3rd Gen S&W, or the newer M&P.

Afrancis, welcome from North Carolina. I originally hailed from Northfork, WV which is not to far from Man. Good luck on your first purchase.

Welcome from just up the road in Kanawha Co.

My first S&W was a SW9VE, it functioned great and was very reliable.
But, if you like to shoot a lot, the trigger may leave a little to be desired.

As a self defense gun, it would be hard to beat for the price though.

I later got an M&P40, these are quite a bit nicer guns, although >$500.
I would recommed stepping up to the M&P if finances allow.

Another possibility is the new SD series for right at $400.
I think the 40 is out and the 9mm will follow shortly.
It has all the M&P features without the replaceable backstraps.

Good luck with the purchase! You will have 5 or 6 Smiths before too long!

Hello from northern WV,never had or even picked up a Sigma but it looks like a solid little pistol,as others have said depends on what you want it for.

Welcome to the forum from KY!

There are lots of helpful and knowledgeable folks here.

I think you will enjoy your time here.

Welcome from Texas Afrancis. Great forum for all things S&W, have fun, learn lots, share what you know.

While not a big fan of the 9 mm, and would steer you towards the 40, it is what you feel is best for your hand, budget, and etc, etc, etc.

Both guns are quality firearms, you cannot go wrong with either.
