I think that is a .38 safety 4th model, made 1898-1907, according to the "Standard Catalog of Smith & Wesson." Those grips look in good shape and are said to be fragile. Is the bore in good shape? If you choose to shoot it you might replace them with reproduction polymer grips. I have one of that model, had it checked by a gunsmith, and was given okay to shoot it with modern factory 38 S&W (not "special") ammo. But others here are way more knowledgeable about shooting these than am I. JB Wood cautions that, if you remove the cylinder for cleaning (by lifting latch and unscrewing in the opposite direction it rotates for firing) be careful not to let the latch drop as that will score an ugly line around the cylinder.
