Help, 3rd gen!!

Ok so I fired my used model 457 today, and it did well on single action even with different mags. On double action I was getting light primer strikes. The old timer is in like new condition. After a few more tries, it was firing well on double action, however even though the slide cycled and chambered the next round, the trigger would not reset to fire again. So what do you think? Seems like a new hammer spring is in order at least.

Sounds like a spring kit from Wolff might put all in order.

Light primer strikes can be the result of goo in the firing pin channel. Did you clean that good?

It's clean, and I will go over everything again. Like I said, the light strikes seem to have disappeared once the gun was warmed up, the trigger not resetting is the remaining problem, but only after double action.

I second the motion on goo -- in the firing pin channel and just as likely in all of the guts in the frame. I would detail strip the entire pistol except for the sights and hand-scrub every piece and every nook and cranny in the frame and slide.

It's probably old, congealed RemOil or residue from WD-40 or some other liquid junk that a previous owner dumped in there with misguided intentions.

Ok alls well for now! Did a decent tear down and cleaned everything w CLP. I replaced the hidden hammer with a replacement one with a spur, heftier. Also put in new recoil springs that I got recently, and stretched the hammer spring out a bit while wait in for the Wolf spring kit. Really a fist full of BANG now!!

Sounds better. If you intend to put this pistol in to any defensive role, I -really- want to see you do a full, no-holds-barred tear down and piece by piece clean. "Easy for me to say" maybe, as I have no idea what your skill level is, but what occurs to me is that I know my skill level and it is nothing to brag about, but I can and have done it and I would do it again when needed.

There are some YouTube videos that are extremely helpful and honestly, all the 3rd Gens are enough the same that the video will serve you extremely well. And you can get your feet wet with simply doing the slide -- remove the thumb safety/decocker and get that firing pin and it's spring out of there, clean all of it out 100%.

You will be pleased with how well it can be done and how much muck you'll pull out of it.
