help dateing my S&W

Very nice M&P Jay, I'm on the lookout for a snubby S prefix myself.
Like this one?
As everyone here knows, I'm a huge fan of the early postwar M&P revolvers with the long action. This one is a gem (although a previous owner did grind away part of the thumb piece - ).

I have just discovered the joy of owning a S & W revolver.
An S966XXX with 2" barrel.
What do I refer to this gun as. Its not a model 10 or a pre-10, is it an M & P. Just trying to learn.
Jay
Way to go. Nice find. A safe estimate for the ship date on your revolver would be December, 1947 or January, 1948. According to my database, quite a high number of 2" M&Ps shipped during those two months, and most of them had serial numbers between S960xxx and S970xxx.
The so-called "pre-Model 10" had the newer high speed hammer. That is what determines the difference. As far as I'm concerned they are all postwar M&Ps. But the later variant had the short action, beginning sometime in early 1948.

That's what I'm after Jack, around my neck of the woods you'll find more shooter grade guns, and that is ok too. A four inch is also on my radar screen too. Thanks for showing us your two inch, very nice!

Thanks Jack. Yours is a beauty! I gave $200 for mine, thought it was a fair price. Doesn't matter now, except I need another one already.
