Hi all,

First time poster with a 1968 manufactured Model 10. I bought K frame square butt grips from ebay that I figured would fit no problem, but as you can see from the pictures, they aren't flush.

Does anyone know of a particular brand of grips that would fit this revolver better? The serial number is D58852 in case they don't come out clearly from the picture, thanks for any help!

Are they factory S&W grips? If not it, and just someone's grips, it might be hard.
Most Factory grips will fit the appropriate frames better than that.
I have a M10 made in '76 with magnas made decades earlier and they fit very well.
Quality aftermarket grip makers products will also fit just fine also.

These were "factory made grips by "Altmont" that I bought on ebay. They seemed high quality from their website, but maybe these are knockoffs?

These are magna grips as well and they just fit so horrible.

Grip makers often use the work "factory" very liberally. Most S&W owners take that to mean Smith & Wesson factory made grips, not some other factory. Having said that, Altamont is, or used to be, a good quality aftermarket alternative to S&W made grips.

In 1968, S&W Magna stocks were still being fitted to the gun by hand, and stamped with the numeric portion of the serial number. You won't get the same fit from a modern aftermarket grip, because it has to be made to fit ALL square butt K-frames, not just your particular gun.

Even if you buy a pair of used S&W grips on Ebay, they may or may not fit perfectly.

Those are aftermarket grips made by Altamont. It is true Altamont is making "factory" grips for S&W, but I would not consider them "factory" for your M10. Search for "vintage" K frame grips. That should result in some "original" used grips to choose from. I just received a pair off of there and they look great and correct.

thank you all so much for the info and schooling me on grips for this older model 10! I'll try my luck at looking for vintage grips. I had no idea they were fitted by hand, but that would certainly explain why this newer grip is an imperfect fit.

While you are looking for correct S&W Magna stocks for your Model 10, keep in mind that the proper style for it is "PC" Magnas. They have the rounded bottom, sort of like those Altamonts of yours. The Magnas with the squared edge were fitted to target sight K frames, not usually for the fixed sight Model 10 M&P.

Here's a couple pictures to illustrate (original stocks on a Model 10-5 from 1968):

Ahhh thats great advice, thank you

I would consider making a Wanted-To-Buy post in the classifieds here, and including the model number and year of the gun you want to find grips for. PC Magnas are not rare, and quite a few people have some sitting around gathering dust. On the other hand, buying used grips on Ebay or elsewhere online can by frustrating, many are too beat up to put on a nice gun. It may be easier to find a Model- and age-appropriate set here.

Done! You are correct about Ebay, it has been fruitless searching there, and most everywhere else on the internet I've scoured.
