Help identify this police service revolver

Rem 788, You can't get a refinish at S&W that will match the original, as they no longer reblue using the old formulas. Leave the gun as is, you won't regret that. Ed

I've taken it to the range a few times now and really enjoy shooting it.
Recoil is very manageable.

I just cant get the hang of the sights. The rear is a trough that runs the length of the cylinder. I am used to that from my H&R. But the front is like a half a penny welded to the barrel. There is no clear delineation like you get with a pointy sight. It seems to shoot about 6" low at 25' but I think I just don't understand how to aim it. It does shoot straight though. My first shot was way low so I aimed a bit above the bullseye, then a little higher. Ended up with a straight vertical line of holes leading to the bullseye. The spread between farthest left and right was less than 2 inches.

Ideas?

Let me guess - are you using the 130 FMJ ammo that every major ammo company now sells? If so, your 1920-era M&P will shoot low. Try a box of standard velocity (non-+P) 158gr lead loads and see if it doesn't get you closer to the bull. That was the standard service load when you S&W was made and the sights are regulated to that.

Actually, I began by using 130gre FMJ from common makers.
Last week I bought a box of Ultramax bulk re-loaded 158gr ast lead semi wadcutters.

They scared the hell out of me the first time I pulled the trigger. A lot more noise but just a little more kick. They make great holes in the target paper too. I was afraid the were too much for the gun but they are definitely not +P, so I guess the are OK.

I was mixing the different brands as I shot, and was not really paying attention to the difference, I guess I didnt realize that even at 15 feet it made a difference. Next time I go to the range (later this week) I will shoot just the SWC and see how they go.
