Help Identifying .38/40 Winchester Top-Break

Congratulations on finding an extremely rare pistol. I also have one, but yours is the first I have actually seen with a factory target sight. Maybe someone here can inquire if Mr. Jenks could render an opinion on how many target sighted units might have been produced.

Very cool. Interesting that it used a Lyman front sight blade (or Lyman patent, anyway). Or was that maybe a later addition to change the hight or sight picture?

It is consigned to me to run at auction.

S&W has always used front sight blades from the big makers, notably Lyman, Marbles, and King, for anything but plain Patridge blades or other plain blades they made inhouse.
There was often no extra charge for a specified blade, so except for Reg Mags, invoices don't usually list what type sight was specified, if any.

The GunBroker auction for this rare S&W Target revolver closed yesterday. Ed.

(PS: Rumor has it that another Model 3 Double Action in .38 Military caliber (38S&W Special), possibility also a Target Model, will soon "surface" to tempt S&W collectors. It is known that at least one, perhaps more, of this model were made in .38 Military caliber for Army Trials, but w/o factory target sights. The Army rejected the gun, so perhaps a the factory added target sights to a returned gun at a distributors request. )
