Help indentifying a revolver.

What caliber is the gun? If .38 Special it is probably what is called a .38 M&P. I would guess around 1940 for the serial number you listed.

Mr Tiger we need pictures. As large as possible, shot with good lighting, no flash, from as many angles as possible. Please show the entire revolver in every picture.

Sounds like you have inherited the quintessential Smith and Wesson police revolver of the early to mid-20th century. When I was a kid every cop I saw carried one of these in his holster.
