Had some guy tell me to be careful with the 2" victory. The serial # is V579832. Here is a Pic of the revolver.

No picture in your post.

If there is no lug securing the end of the ejector rod, it is probably a .38 S&W, originally produced for the British Commonwealth countries. Many of these were cutdown after WW II. Most were also rechambered to .38 special as well.

ORIGINAL TEXT REPLACED:

OK, I see the photo now. That's a cut-down barrel and the gun is at best a $150-200 shooter. It may be rechambered from .38 S&W to .38 Special if it started life as a British Service Revolver. Those are incorrect postwar stocks. I can't tell because of the contrasty photo, but that doesn't look like a wartime phosphate finish to me. The gun may be been reblued in addition to getting a nose job and new shoes.

Pic is up. Photobucket will update the photo to a larger size. It takes a few min

This may have been implied in Gil's and David's comments, but an authentic factory 2" Victory Model is a rare bird and quite valuable, which is why "some guy" probably warned you about it.

Definitely a cut down as others have stated. S&W's have a locking lug at the front to engage the extractor unlike many Colts. Stocks should be plain walnut IIRC. Its an OK carry gun but has no real collector value and as David said, probably only worth $100 to $150 as a shooter. S&W made millions of this style .38 and there are much better examples out there for not much money.

Just a little additional information. Yours would date from about May 1944. These chopped Victories may not be worth much, but are generally OK as shooters.
