I have already found a little about this gun, but was wondering if anybody here could share what if anything they know.

Colt Police Positive .38 (Not 38 SPL) I have discovered

The back strap is stamped (RY EX AGY) Rail Express Agency

And I am almost 100% it has been re-finished

SN 364347

Any idea on value???

Thanks

You might want to post your question on the Colt Forum in the Revolver area. The real Colt experts hang out there. But some are occasionally here too. Yes, the PP is chambered for the .38 S&W, not the .38 Special. Google on Colt Serial Numbers. Colt has a site where you can enter your SN, and it will provide you a date.

Because of the refinish, the gun is probably not worth more than $300. To detract more from the value aspect, the original front sight was completely removed and some sort of non standard sight replaced it. The stocks are Jay Scott faux pearl. Colt owned the grip replacement Jay Scott company at one time. They made aftermarket grips for various guns, also including S&W models. The original missing grips would have been checkered black walnut with brass liners for the screw and eschutcheon nut inlets. The 32 cal and 38 cal Colt Police Positives were not continued by Colt in the post WWII era. Also, the barrel has been cut down. Standard length barrels were 4,5 and 6 inches. Shorter barrels could be custom ordered.

In unadulterated and original condition, having a Railway Express stamping on the gun would have increased the value a small amount. It makes no differende now with all the replacements and modifications on this particular gun. Just check to make sure it's safe to shoot and has no mechanical issues, and go out and enjoy it.

Your Police Positive SN 364347 was manufactured in 1934.

I'll agree with Malysh. If that PP was in original condition, the Railway Express marking would command a premium. The modifications to the PP would more than negate any such premium. It's basically just a shooter in its current state, worth maybe $300, more or less.

thanks for the help guys. I was ready to pay $350 maybe even $400 for this Colt but the guy wanted too much.

I had to pass on it
