I took the thumb piece of off my M29 to clean between it and the shroud and now I can't move the threaded stud to put the thumb piece back on or to open the cylinder.
Is there a trick to putting the thumb piece back on??

I see no reply to this, and to be honest I can not envision what has happened by what you have said, so... just go back and look everything over, think through what you have done and how it should be and you will find the problem.

There is no "trick" to putting the thumb piece back on.

The only thing I can think of is you have "pushed" the latch inward, and it may be binding on the hammer. I can't think of any reason you can't get the thumb-piece "nut" back on unless you have the latch pushed in and "cocked". Try gently getting ahold of the latch stud, and pulling it up and side to side. DO NOT use any pliers to grip the stud.

Thanks guys.
Ended up taking it to my gun doctor. He had to take the side plate off too fix the problem.
It seems that I must have pushed the threaded stud backwards (towards the grips) when I cleaned under it. It normally can't move that far with the thunb latch in place. I ended up moving too far back which caused the cylinder lock to pull inside the frame and bind up on something inside.

I know my way around the inside of Sigs, but these Smiths are a bit different... lol
