These grips are on a nice '48 2in M&P I picked up last week. They appear to be pre-war grips and the numbers written on the insides of them don't match the ser# of the revolver. From what I can gather they are from the early 20's? Can anyone give some input?

Those grips are proper from about 1923 to 1929-30. They appear to have been refinished.

I agree with Lee's observations and also believe they were refinished based upon the poor fit to frame, especially on the right grip panel. Otherwise they are nice enough and certainly serviceable although not contemporaneous with the production of your revolver. As an aside, I personally prefer service style stocks over the Magna's. I think your revolver, if made in '48 may have shipped with service stocks of checkered walnut with medallions or possibly the early pre war Magna's, but I can't recall the date of first issue and I'm away from my references at the moment. Perhaps another member could offer comment on that? Hope you enjoy your new prize!

I believe your gun shipped with magnas. I have not seen a SQUARE butt shipped post war with service types. Yes, some round butts did ship with service types early on, but not square butts.

Being pig headed I'm going against the grain here and say they have not been refinished. They may have been cleaned and re-oild but that's as far as I would take it. The checkering is original and un-cut and the borders show normal wear consistant with the rest of the panel. Just my nickles worth.
