It does have a hammer. I'd post pictures, but it looks like I'm not allowed.

It would be a .38 Doble Action, 4th model, made 1895-1909.

Thanks. I found a picture online and that is definitely it. Do you have any good ideas on identifying a pre 1945 custom side by side 12ga. It has very few markings.

Post ALL the markings, where they are on the 12 ga., especially any numbers or proof marks on the water table, and all dimensions, plus type of stock wood & steel,type & material of the butt plate, engravings, etc., and post pictures and probably some of us can tell you. Why do you say it's a custom gun? Ed.
