I recently inherited a S&W revolver and don’t know anything about it.
Looking to see if anyone knows how old this is and if there are handles available for me to pickup.
Would it be hard for me to install on my own? I’m guessing it’s as simple as a couple bolts.
Not sure why there is a piece of tape on it either.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

The handle and the cylinder both have the same serial number.

Hi There,

It looks like your revolver is a .38 S&W CF DA 3rd Model.
These were made from 1884 to 1895 (serial number range
119001 to 322700).

Reproduction grips can be found but will need final fitting
to fit perfectly.

Cheers!

Wow
Thanks Webb

That was fast!
Thanks for the quick research and reply.

I really appreciate the help!

This will help me in locating a set of grips also.

Take care
Steve

Not sure if this was fate or not, but I did also just receive one of these revolvers as well from my father in law. Great to know a bit of history on it when they were made, as the only markings I can find on it, are the S&W pat number paragraph along the top of the barrel and then the serial number on the butt of the gun along with the bottom of the lever to open the pistol.

Thanks,
Chris

Hi There,

Welcome to the Forum!

On these models, S&W stamped the serial number on the
butt of the revolver, inside of the RH grip panel, back of the
cylinder, barrel latch (what you called the lever to open the
pistol) and the back of the barrel (in the cutout where the
barrel latch resides).

Cheers!
Webb
