Help with Model 36 Value

I have a model 36 Chief's Special that I'm considering selling. Could I please get some opinions on sale and trade value?

The s/n is J853XXX which to what I've gathered dates it to 1981, but the barrel is pinned. My non-expert interpretation of the NRA modern gun condition standards puts it at a solid "very good" condition. It's a very clean gun. No box or papers though.

Thanks for any help on both a direct sale and trade-in value.

Since it has a pinned barrel, I'd say it's worth around $500.00. Depending on where you live, of course.

Around here a Square butt J frame is a $200 deduct from that $500 valuation and even then a very tough sell. Maybe one guy in 10,000 that wants a J frame prefers Square butt.

Most I've seen at the Local Shows have an asking price of $550-600. Best I've been offered off asking is $50. Don't see many selling unless very nice and with box. In my area a sb is going to bring around $400 in vg condition with a rb bringing a little more. Nickel seems to demand a huge increase in price.

Guilty here . I'm in that oddball group. For me it's all about better control with the square butt.

$350 here in my midwestern neighborhood ..... nice guns but super common and generally a little less popular with the square butt.

My neighborhood is the Internet, but count me as that 1 of 10,000 guy. Out-the-door prices were $300 and $360, respectively, for the 1955 4-screw and 1976 Model 36-1.

Of the two digit model number j frames (eg. M49, 38, 40 etc) the M36 is the most common.

Because of the exposed hammer and square butt, it’s not a very good pocket gun.

The square butt makes it easier to shoot well than a round butt j frame but a 36 is a sd gun, not a range or target gun. It’s kind of neither fish nor fowl.

$400.00 is about right. The pinned barrel is a plus. Without it:$350.00

Agree on the square butt mdl 36 worth $200 less. I picked up one at a Police Supplier in Fl several years ago for $150 simply because they didn't want revolvers or square butt. Works great foe me

Didn't realize i was in the great minority- I much prefer the square butt from the visual point of view. Control is great, too. Mid 500s seems to be the range in my locale. -rick.
