help with my m41

hello-i have had my m41 for about 10 years and it recently developed a tendency to short cycle. the failures to eject seem to start randomly into a session and seem independent of ammunition. is this evidence of a fatigued recoil spring? any other suggestions of what may be the source of difficulties? gun never dropped or damaged and the chamber is clean. the mag feeds easily. many thanks for any help.

Have you ever replaced the recoil spring ? I change mine every 1500 rounds. I use mine a lot for bullseye matches. It would be a good start to change the recoil spring .

hello-no, i have never replaced the spring. for some reason i seem to have expected it to go on forever! during my time, it has not had anywhere like the kind of use that competition puts a piece through, but the time seems to have had the same result. given the number of years it looks like i will be following your advice post haste. thankyou.

41s get dirty in the area of the breech block (a separate insert that is pinned into the "slide") and extractor. It is entirely possible your extractor is a bit crudded up and is not able to function normally.

If you have not done so lately, it might be a good time to disassemble your slide and thoroughly clean everything. I think you will find it is worth the trouble to remove the breech block and extractor so you can do a good job of cleaning. You really can't do it otherwise.

The breech block will sometimes peen itself into the slide very tightly and be difficult to remove. Put some Kroil on it and work with it (wiggle it around as best you can) and it will eventually come free. When you reassemble, you may want to stone or lightly file the peened edges of the block so it can be returned to its normal position without undue force. Don't get carried away with this.

I think cleaning will solve your problem.

i have never gone this deep into the action, but it seems like my time has come. i will be in the market for some drifts and suitable hand stones. many thanks. (and a set of magnifying viewers)

You want to make sure you drift the pin out from the CONCAVE side, and reinstall it from the convex side. remove the pin about 2/3 out and the fireing pin and spring will come out then remove the pin the rest of the way while putting pressure on the breach face to keep from losing the extractor, extractor pin and spring.
