Help with picking the right sight/optics

Hi all, new to the forum and looking for some help on optics for my new 15-22. I'm kind of conflicted on the right type of sights...I kind of want a traditional scope, but I also would like the concept of the red dot or reflex or something. I'm not looking to break the bank. It's just a .22 That being said, the bulk of this guns use will be plinking and squirrel elimination. I kind of like the fixed power idea, but if I went that route I would want to be able to use my iron sights too. Does anything accommodate that idea? Is there a situation where I could have,say, a fixed 3 or 4x red dot and still be able to see my irons through the red dot, but actually use the iron sights? That seems most practical to me. How do pistol scopes work on the AR platform? Any I should look at?

Red dot. Then you need to decide if you like absolute co witness or lower 1/3, when you decide which one you like then you can select a riser (if you need one, some red dots you won't need one but many you will)

Either one will allow you to still use iron sights. Or you could just get a 45* mount for your sights

MOST red dot sights are not magnified, which is actually one of their advantages. Some have a 2X or so magnifier that can be mounted, or flipped in place, but most magnifying sights are scopes. ONE reason red dots are great, and popular, is that since they aren't magnified, you can (and should) keep both eyes open when sighting with them. It makes target acquisition easier and quicker.

Although you can add a magnifier behind a red dot, nothing takes the place of a dedicated scope if you use magnification 99% of the time.

I have a Marlin Model 60 that I use with a scope for precision work and squirrel/rabbit hunting, but on my AR-style rifles, I prefer a red dot sight on a high riser so I can cowitness through it with my iron sights in the lower 1/3 of the red dot's viewing area. That way, if the RDS goes out, you can still use your irons without removing it. The Primary Arms Micro Dot on a 1" riser seems to be a good small combo for non-tactical use. That is what's going on my 15-22 ASAP (I have an Eotech EXPS3-4 on my M4)

You can always put a magnifier on a flip mount behind a RDS so you can flip it out of the way when you don't need magnification.

But I just haven't came up with the coin for that Eotech G33 magnifier yet

I got the Primary Arms MultiReticle Red Dot Sight PAM3M for my 15-22, and they do have available a 3x or 6x magnifier designed to be used with it.

[/IMG]I used a front A2 sight from trueshottechnologies a rear flip up sight and a UGC red dot. The red dot sits on a 1/2" riser to line up my iron sights.

A great 4x scope, don't let the price fool you, this is a GREAT scope. The mount is hollow allowing you to use your iron sights without altering anything at all. I love this scope.
