Shot my first IDPA match last week with a 3 inch Model 65. Put some
red finger nail polish on front sight but was still tough to see in full sun.
Anyone have any suggestions? Thanks Jim

Fiber optic front sights are the most popular in the gun games for good reasons, mainly visibility. If you don't want to change the front sight out try white or day glow orange (or any other flavor). I currently run a red fiber on my game gun but have used green with equal success. That said I have been running my carry gun the last few weeks and it has night sights.

This is one of the reasons I dislike white guns.

Black sights are most visable for me.

Since it is too expensive to change sights on a model 65, I'd suggest getting the garish model paints and experimenting until you find the one you like. Start with a white base coat and then try bright orange, etc.

FO front sights are the way to go if you get a gun someday that takes them.

After shooting IDPA a few years I finally decided that I would use guns and gear I actually carried on or off duty. If it isn't working for you on the range then you either need to use something else or train with it till it does work for you. If it doesn't work in a game it sure won't work for you in real life. The IDPA matches helped me to evaluate a lot if gear.

I also use a stainless revolver for IDPA (model 64). I use the paint shown in the picture to paint my front sight. It is a fluorescent orange paint that holds up well and makes the front sight stand out very well. Hobby Lobby sells the paint pen.

Yes. Look VERY carefully at the front sight to see if you lucked out and it's pinned. It can be very hard to tell. Best way is (usually) to look down the barrel (from the muzzle) and try to see if there's a line where the sight blade would "sit" on the ramp. Ramp and sight hopefully being separate pieces and the sight replaceable. Some are, some aren't.

Agree that different color paints until you find something that you can see is the simplest approach.
I MIGHT could talk my 1911 guy into dovetailing one for a fibre optic but I would not want to pay regular gunsmith rates for the job.

I saw a gunzine article once that showed a stainless gun with the topstrap, hogwallow sight, and barrel rib coated flat black and the front sight blade coated red. Take some careful airbrush work with Gunkote, but it came out good.

sights in bright sunlight

I would blacken the sights with a carbide lamp. Cuts the glare and gives a nice, crisp sight picture.

I use red lumber crayon on my front sight, carry it in my pocket, refresh it when it needs it. No glare, good color, no damage to the piece.

I had a smith file a notch in the ramp front sight of a 64-7 and then put a orange insert. That worked OK.

Then, I ended up finding a good deal on a 66-7. I installed a Weigand Combat Enhanced Rear Sight Blade and a SDM Super Sight FO front sight
