Here's what a loose 15-22 barrel looks like!

Just a reminder.... check those barrel nuts

After the OOB the other day I decided to take the rifle apart for better inspection. All looks to be fine... BUT... I had not checked the tightness of the barrel nut for quite some time. It had turned loose. Keep an eye on em....

HOLY CARP! i just read this thread to see what it was about as i seen it before but figured it wasnt something i needed to do as in "removing my Barrel"
Well guess who has a barrel so loose i bet it can go side to side 1/2"?
And i been shooting this darn thing for accuracy.

Heading to Home depot now.

i got 1 in a week ago that the barrel nut had mybe 3 threads holding it in... how it was running i have no idea

There should be a sticky about checking these things, I know i may have 1200-1500 rounds threw mine but its hardly abused.
I just got back with the parts which i hope i bought the right sized pvc 3/4" ID which i did.
But i can now figure out why i was getting such odd flyers when i could nail 3 shot 1" groups at 50 yards and then 1 shot goes 2" off.

NVM i see the sticky, But may i suggest PHIL you put that everyone should check these from time to time as regular maintenance instead of just a link on how to make one?

In a somewhat shameless self-promotion, I'd spend $30 and get yourself a ready to use Shooboy ShooWrench. I'll have hopefully 20 done by next weekend. Mine can be used with a torque wrench and a crow foot socket to ensure tightening to factory specs instead of guessing. Just my $.02, Randy aka Shoo

In another shameless self promotion. Buy a tacticool22.com Barrel Nut Wrench. It is steel and very easy to use. And a bit less expensive. Just another option. If you need a TOP quality gunsmith hammer, buy a shooboy, you won't be sorry.

At the Mod's suggestion I'll start offering these in the Classified section of the Forum, probably starting tomorrow. I shouldn't be pushing my wares in this part of the forum anyway. Sorry if I caused any issues, Shoo

Ya know, When its something that is starting to become an issue ANYONE here can have. Awareness and your options in fixing it isn't shameless promotion to a certain point of course.

I made the PVC wrench which is easy with a dremel and some fitting as you have to increase the inside diameter just a bit for it to slide into the grooves.
But i also snapped the nubs off mine while torquing it down, So i gotta remake it once my battery recharges.

But i will in 2 weeks when i get paid buy a metal one from one of you guys that make them. The PVC is a quick fix but not a long term solution if this is a reoccurring issue.
Ill be looking for a way to mark my barrel nut so i can tell if its moved.

I can only imagine all the mid to high priced ammo i just wasted shooting my gun with a loose barrel, But it also makes me anxious to go back and really see how accurate the gun CAN be.

How do you put an extension on that nut?
It is a wrench end with 4 "fingers" that screws onto a 10" piece of heavy duty PVC or metal pipe. A set screw keeps the pipe from backing out of the wrench. Real simple, and you get to put a little work into making the wrench the way you want.
This forum is great for sharing information about problems and solutions.

If you do buy the tacticool wrench i highly recommend you look into grabbing a set of his gorgeously made barrel clamps. They fit in your vise and help you to hold the barrel when applying torque to your barrel nut or suppressor/flash hider, etc. The man does great work and is a class act all the way. His CNC machined wrenches are beautifully made too. My ShooWrenches are Bridgeport milling machine made using digital readouts for accuracy. Either way you get a professionally made task specific tool that will engage all 4 barrel nut slots, and that will ensure smooth and even torque applied to the nut. Nice to have choices I always say. Thanks, Shoo

Thats exactly why i was asking about how to put a handle on the tacticool22 nut so i know both my options, I pretty much know everything i need to know about the Shoowrench as i followed the thread about it.
Good to see you guys saying good things about each other even tho you have 2 similar solutions.

Last night my second attempt at the pvc version held up to the torque i felt it needed without snapping the fingers off. Level, Even pressure is the key to not ripping those off. But at least its easy to remake it if it breaks again.

A little trick which may have been mentioned but i didn't see it. I took some "White Out" and at the nut marked the barrel and the nut with a line so i can tell if it moves at all. Shouldn't since i cleaned all grease, dirt and oil off all the threads of both parts and applied generous amounts of Blue Locktite as i have no need to take it off again, But it should come loose if i want it to with the wrench.

Done. You guys let me know if you think anything else needs to be added.

Very nice additions to that sticky Phil, I know i never thought id have to check mine since i never intended to take my barrel off.
Eventually im sure i would have had some major issues had i not found it so soon.
Glad to see you added a link to the member made tools for sale in the classifieds also.
Looks like you have it all covered well.

Hey DasFriek, I'm going to go out on a limb here and say there's probably an extremely small chance that you'll be getting that barrel nut off again with a plastic wrench if you used a significant amount of blue Loctite. I'd be interested to find out if you decide to remove it again, keep us posted, thanks, Shoo
