Son stopped by Cabela's and found some 22 Long Rifle on the otherwise totally bare ammo shelves. Bought 4 - 100 round sleeves at $6.99 each so not an outrageous price in these days marketplace.

He wants to take the old Remington Nylon 66 out this weekend for some exercise and I'm coming along with my Model 34 or the Model 17 (or both) along with some of my stash (CCI Velocitor, or CCI Standard Velocity).

I believe the Herter's is a Cabela house brand, and its labelled 40 gr Copper Plated Round Nose at 1300 fps.

My usual go-to the CCI is labelled 1435 fps and has never been trouble running through the Nylon 66.

So the Herter's is a tad slower but still supersonic so should run my semi 22 OK, but do any of you have any experience with this Herter's brand ammo, good or bad? Stinky, heavy fouling? etc.

Some say 22LR is 22LR and get what you can, wherever you can, whenever you can but I'm still a little picky about what gets run through my guns.

Would appreciate any opinions on Herter's 22LR ammo.

Hmm, that looks like the highest quality Herters ammo I've seen in any caliber recently. I honestly expected steel cases.
Should perform adequately. Dont expect match precision though

info

I bought a bulk pak when they first brought them out, now I wish I had bought a bunch. They were average bulk pak ammo, a few duds, flyers, but good plinker ammo, most certainly better than most Winchester & Armscor bulk ammo.

Cabela's Herter's brand was my favorite case-lot 158gr. FMJ plinking ammo in .38SPL and .357. It was rebranded Sellier & Bellot, and excellent quality.
When Bass took over Cabela's, I asked about the "new" Herter's and was told that Federal/Vista had the new rebranding agreement.

I believe it is made by winchester, slightly better than super x bulk, but not great. i shot through about 50 rounds of it in one of my 10/22's and it ran fine. Lately the winchester super x bulk with the same flat nose hollowpoint has been not running in my semi auto's, in several batch numbers too..

I would say it "should" be fine, but if you have a few failures to eject, and light loads, or duds like I have with winchetser, then don't use it in a semi auto.

That stuff may run just fine though, like I said, it worked fine in a 10/22 and even the crappy winchester runs fine in my marlin 60 and my revolvers so...

Herters Ammo

I just picked up a Ruger Wrangler at Cabelas. When you but a gun, you get the "privilege" of buying 8 boxes of ammo.
They only had Herters .22 in 100 packs. Was glad to get anything.
When I tried the Wrangler for the first time I had problems getting some of the rounds into the cylinder. Thought that I had a "bad" gun, but tried 2 other brands of ammo and they went in fine.
Going through the Herters, some went in easily, some with a bit of force, and a few not at all.
Fired rounds eject fine, so it appears it is actually the copper plated bullets themselves that are oversized.
Shooting wise, did not have any duds, but could tell that the loads were inconsistent.

The local Cabelas was selling Aguila "Super Extra" 22 lr copper wash round nose, 1,255 fps for around $6/50. Another local shop was selling the .22 subsonic for the same price. Both labeled Made in Mexico. Not any dirtier than other 22 lr, as far as I can tell.

The Herter's house brand 9mm FMJ is headstamped *USA*, and 9mm LUGER under that. A store employee told me they contract with any manufacturer that wants to make it for a price, so as to load etc, "it can vary", and the next shipment can be from a different factory. Only thing stays the same is the box with "Made in USA" on the label...

Current Herter's 22s are made by Winchester. About on a par with Win Bulk pack, Semms to be ok ammo. I bought some of their 500 bulk packs a few months ago While it was still available. ..we shot up one brick of it with kittle problems Tight ib a few cylinder s with the M-34, Went through a Mark I Ruger Target

I wouldn't complain about Herter's .22lr, or any other caliber right now.

Herter's is just the Cabela's/Bass Pro "House Brand", a name they put on something. They don't manufacture any ammo, they don't have factories etc. It's a big chain with the financial clout to buy something in big numbers, have it put in a box of their choosing, and sell it that way.

A Herter's order is likely going to be filled by the manufacturer first, before smaller orders that are coming through wholesale distributers and ending up on LGS shelves. That's because it might be the single biggest order that factory receives.

I've used the Herter's shot shells for years with good results. They also had a very competitive line of aluminum cased handgun ammo with Nyclad-like bullets. That was pre-merger so YMMV.

I still have a box of their .22 Long Rifle rounds from those days when everything in their catalog was "the BEST you will ever find".

Recently bought some Herters 9mm.
It was made by Winchester, got a recall notice.
Luckily mine not in the Recall.
