I have done extensive ballistic gel testing. Federal HST 124gr Standard pressure has been stellar.
I also have the PC shield. It is an excellent carry pistol with a couple of potential issues. The original mag springs especially in their 8 rounders are junk and have been major issues for some. Either replace those with MagGuts+1 for a total of 9 rounds. 7 rounds has long since disappeared. If you don't want to do MagGuts +1 (which has been great for most everyone) then you need to replace the mag springs with Wolf gunsprings. The oem mag springs have been bending. The next issue is the recoil spring assembly. Some of the oem assemblies are locking up making the gun inoperable. The resolution to that is the Stainless Steel Guide Rod Inc. assembly. You can get that on Amazon. The only caveat is that you can't shoot +P ammo with the Stainless Guide Rod Inc assembly. Also I have done extensive testing on self defense rounds and the Federal HST 124 gr has been absolutely STELLAR. So I recommend you purchase a few 50 round boxes of HST 124 Standard pressure and make sure they function 100% in your pistol. If you plan on doing the magazines and recoil springs clearly test the ammo AFTER you do these modifications. If you would like to pm me I can tell you where to get the HST at a very reasonable price. I would not carry my Shield until I did the mag springs and the recoil assembly. Both of my oem mag springs bent on me right from the beginning. I did not have any issue with the oem recoil assembly but many have. The stainless one uses one spring and is extremely simple design

Hi OP. As for practice ammo, there are a couple brands that note on their boxes not to use in ported barrels, Blazer Brass is one of them (the manufacturer confirmed that to me as well), there likely is one or two more marked that way. Per those manus, this is due to thin plating that could come off; i didn't have any trouble when i used blazer (before learning it was not recommended) but have stopped "just in case".

I've been told Speer ammo is good to go with ported barrels, and the Federal cs dept said their American Eagle line is suggested but not Federal Champ.

Greetings from Little River. Bought my full size M&P in May and my 9mm Shield Performance Center in Nov. Using a Uncle Mikes pocket holster in my cargo pants. I'm using brass reloads that I buy online for 20 cents. Carry Hornady Critical Defense.

Welcome! My Shield loves the 124gr Blazer Brass ammo. I also reload and it has been perfect on all my own ammo as well. For carry ammo I use the Federal HST 124gr.
My EDC holster for the Shield is an N82 Tactical Professional model. It'll set you back about $70 but for me it is the most comfortable holster I've used.

I have 4 Shield pistols 2 in 9mm 1 in 40 and 1 in 45 (45 my favorite) I have NEVER EVER had an issue with any magazine springs in either weapon. Nor I have i has an issue with the recoil spring assembly. As far as ammo (defensive) The speer Gold Dot 124 +P has some real good street credentials (NYPD load) also the Federal HST 124 +P, If money is no issue then the Corbon DPX is pretty good stuff.
As far as holsters, The Shield 9mm is a pretty small light weight gun, so in my opinion you do not need a real large holster to conceal that gun (Crossbred etc) In my opinion a simple Kydex IWB single clip would suffice check out Alpha Concealment.
Practice ammo? Just about any major company makes some decent ball ammo stick with Federal Speer Remington Winchester and you should be G2G.

My shield loves just about anything in 124 gr. As for a holster, it depends on what you are looking for iwb, owb etc. I use a Don Hulme holster I love Don Hume H721-OT Belt Holster

I am having very good luck w/ Independence aluminum case ammo for practice. M&P9c, Beretta 92s, Glock 19 all eat it just fine.
