Stopped in my favorite LGS today and they had a nickel model-36 round butt that caught my eye. I thought it was marked as a Mod-36 no dash, but had a "J" prefix serial number. Is this possible (or did just just mis-read the marking)? I don't recall the number sequence as I was also looking at a couple other revolvers (Model-14's) he had in there too. This is an addiction, I want them all.

Hi
The Model 36 (no dash number) was in production all the way to 1988. J prefix serial numbers started in 1969, so yes, it is entirely possible. There is no issue here.

Ok, thanks. In reading my handy dandy e-copy of the SCSW I was thinking it should be at least 36-1 (1967) based on the "j" prefix. I wasn't sure if it was possible to be a transition gun.

Unlike certain other models, the dash numbers on the post-1960 Model 36, don't always represent replacement variants. The Model 36-1 was, in 1967, an addition to the model line. It designates a particular variation - the 3" heavy barrel. The Models 36 and 36-1 thereafter continued in tandem production until 1988, when both were upgraded with engineering changes (to the -2 and -3, respectively).

When I first read your thread title I thought we were going to read another session of Revolvers Anonymous and how you were addicted to buying quality revolvers! :D

Great thread title!

Oh, this should be a session of that. The last time I was in the LGS I bought 4 revolvers. This time there are 4 more that I would love to buy. The Model-36 was just the one that confused me.
