I love S&W products and have more than a handful, but I’m also a fan of other quality American made guns from the past century.

High Standard fits that bill...
I’ve owned a number of their guns over the years, and have held onto three of their pistols.

Feel free to post your HS guns here.

In order of age:

A post WWII 6-3/4” HD Military.

Their products took a back seat to none, won numerous competitions and had wonderful fit, finish and design. They're apart of American history that deserves to be remembered!

I knew a Ranger back in the day who said if he could have only one gun it would be a High Standard. You have nine rounds and you are going to connect at least one of those on the target and it will eventually bring the target down. Then you can finish the target off however you can.

I have a bunch of High Standard .22 target pistols that I have acquired over a lot of years. The first one was a customized gun worked up by John Giles, one of the old-time pistolsmiths. It had a custom barrel, a rib on top and the trademark "wagon wheels" rear sight. The gentleman I bought it from had the test target from when he bought it. It showed 5 shots put into 11/32ds of an inch at 50 yards from a machine rest. I paid a pretty penny but I figured I needed all the help I could get.

My bullseye .22 for many, many years. Club members stood in line to buy it when I decided to stop shooting competition. Action/trigger by Mike Curtis, barrel by CPC. An absolute tack driver.

Some really nice High Standards. Best all around triggers of any guns I've used. I have a couple more around here somewhere but these are the only pictures I have handy.

Great Posts - Thanks -I remember a buddy in High School who received a High Standard Pistol for Christmas back in the 1960's. I was envious and have always wanted one. Will eventually get one.

Don't forget that High Standard made many of the barrels for Ithaca and Remington Rand 1911A1's during WWII. Identified by the HS stamped on the barrel near the barrel lug. Also some of us in Law Enforcement carried High Standard 12 gauge Pump Riot Shotguns in the 1960's-1970's before many departments went to Remington 870s.

Picture of my 1943 Ithaca 1911A1 (all original) with High Standard Barrel.

High Standards... oh YEAH!

Gotta love 'em,

Here are a couple of .22 Short pistols. I shoot the short barreled (2nd Model Olympic) gun more than any other.

Best wishes everyone!

The first handgun I bought was a HS Duramatic. It was the bottom of the HS line, but it taught me a great deal. It was accurate and reliable. I still have it and shoot it from time to time.

Over 40 years ago, I shot indoors some and one of the other shooters had a top of the line HS and he let it me shoot it. It was a joy to shoot. I never shot high end .22's much after those early years. I gravitated to center fires. It is always enjoyable to shoot an accurate .22 when I get the chance.

Earlier this year I went to the LGS for some CLP spray. $300 later came out with the Model B. Great ergos and a fun shooter. Looking for an original mag to go with the one that came with the gun. Bought a Triple K that has been no bueno.

The High Standard is my most ALMOST BOUGHT gun of all time - LOL!! Love the thing for accuracy, terrific trigger and reliability but the deal breaker for me was always the location of the magazine release and the "left handed" slide release location. Other than that - I love them!

I am actually sorry I never got one - contrary to the above. :(

I currently have two Hamden guns built in the 70’s. One is a 107 Victor Military with barrel weight, the other is a Citation 107 Military. The quality of these guns is superb and they must be handled to truly appreciate. The H.S triggers on the Supermatic series are some of the best that you will find. They can be magazine finicky and genuine magazines are expensive if you can find them (lots of imitators out there). Feed them standard velocity ammo (1080 FPS) and they will give good service and last a long time.
I’m glad to see this thread because High Standard has great heritage and not many younger shooters know about them.

The best moderately priced .22 target pistols ever made, IMO. I’d tromple over a stack of 41s to get to my High Standards if it was important to shoot a good score. The high-dollar .22s might be a bit more accurate, but if they are, I can’t use it. My High Standards will outshoot me every time.
