I purchased my pre 28 HP about 3 weeks ago from a LGS for $640 OTD and was very happy with the price. It also is a first year HP, no box but all #s match including the grips. Good luck and post pics when you bring it home.
FYI, According to the S&W book, there were approximately 8,400 of the first year (1954) HP made.

4" or 6" barrel? The 4" sells for more. I have a 6 inch (early 70s, no box)that is in great shape that I love. I wouldn't sell it for $500, but that's about what it's worth.

Thanks for the replys, this guy is FIRM at a $1000. Its nice, but not that nice! Most people here think they struck gold when they get a hold of ANY older S&W, regards Ernie

P.S. I passed on it

AT a thousand $$$$, there MUST be a second one somewhere you didn't see yet; to be included in the deal.

I get your point and want to believe this is just an aberration, but I don't know, what I have seen here in Texas these guns,28-2s, all start at 650-750 and no one wants to come off their price.

1000 bucks is crazy but since these guns are like muscle cars, there just aren't many around and none are being made like they were so pretty soon in the next to 3-5 years 1000 bucks will become the threshold.

That seems high now, but it will be a good deal in a little while.

HP value

I bought a 4" 1954 HP late last year. I posted the same question you did and after considering the opinions received went to GB. There was a 6" 5 screw that closed that day that was in very good condition that went for over $1,000.00.
I gladly paid the gentleman the $700. we settled at. Condition is somewhere around 95%, maybe a little better. I think I paid less than market value, but not by much. By this time next year, it will seem to have been a bargain.

pre-28 value

Some of the old timers on this forum haven't been out of the house in a while.
28s here in Wisconsin have doubled in price in just the last 5 years.
I just saw a minty 6" 28-2 (gun only) sell for $900.00 within the first 3 hours of the gun show opening. I couldn't believe it myself - but that's what people are paying for them to get a nice one while they can.
You might say that people are foolish to pay that much - but all I know is that I won't sell mine now for less knowing what people are willing to pay.
Supply and demand guys!

I said this many times any decent N Frame is a buy at $1,000 and under wether it's a 4" or 6" barrel any finish. Just look at the online listings. The better condition n frame revolver with a 4" / 6" barrel is worth at least $1k.
I'm a late comer to s&w guns but I have many decades of experience in the military guns. I seen prices go in the up direction to the point if it fills a gap in your collection or fills your wants/needs to have one the cost doesn't matter right? You can wait but for how long before the cost goes even higher? Buy it now or dog deeper later on or never get one.

You snooze you lose. Break out the crying towel?

There's a time to be frugal and a time to crack open the rusted shut wallet.
Ya the old day prices are long gone the values are much higher now.

Is there a price limit? There is no limit. It's condition vs price plus how bad you want/need it. Remember to haggle for the best price. Your price range is between $500 to $1,000.

To me a M28 HP is worth $700 a m27 is worth $800. That's your average good deal at 97/98% condition. Average.....

I put a single $100 Bill in a few pockets, a $50 in another pocket.
I put $600/ 6 -$100 bills in another pocket for haggling. Never show your complete wad.

I go into haggling a $600 fan with the 6 bills. After some haggling I may offer another $100 or $50 depending on the sellers body English. Make your best deal.

I like fine Smiths. I am also CHEAP! But, a couple of years ago I bought a 6" 28 no dash (1960). It is a very clean gun purchased on G.B. for $450 & ship etc. I couldn't be happier! Glad I bought it when I did. KEEP SEARCHING! You can do better... MY opinion. Bob

Just picked up a 28 no dash 6in that doesn't even have a cylinder line for $900.00 with the original box. It was before the show started and I was standing there when he set it out. Have no idea how long it would have lasted but it was the nicest one I have ever seen and I wasn't going to let it go.

Look at what were buying with paper money? The stock market goes up and down faster than a roller coaster ride yet gun values only go up think about it. Even if we buy at the higher limit price wise in a few years at the most it will be worth more. If your looking at it from a investors point of view your like betting on a one horse race, you can't lose.
