I'm excited to be getting a 1086! I'm a huge 3rd gen DAO fan. I have a 5943, 3953, 6946 and a CS9D.

I've seen a fair amount of info on the 1076 models (I have a non-FBI shooter), but can't find as much or anything on the 1086's.

Anyone know for which agencies these were produced?

Thanks in advance.

Obligatory pics...

As far as I know the 1086 was not produced for any particular agency. The 1046 was supposedly made for TVA Tennessee Valley Authority and only 151 were produced. I don't think any guns were actually delivered to security for the nuclear facility.

Interesting...I ASSumed that they were mostly produced for local/state agencies given the relatively low production numbers....

I'm really excited about getting it, no matter what.

I tried to search to see if anyone got their 1086 "lettered" but didn't find anything.

As an aside I've wondered how many 5943's were produced as well and if anyone got their 5943 "lettered"

thanks for the responses so far!

I thought the KSP used the 1026. Nevermind it was the VSP that used the 1026.

"In 1990 the Virginia State Police contracted with S&W for 2200 Model 1026 pistols, and by July 1990 they had received the entire order."

Great pistol. Already been to the range! Love these 3rd gen DAO pistols. It's funny, I shoot this thing better that my 1076 in SA.

Beautiful gun!
I prefer the palm swell grips.
I also like wood with my steel.
I love my 1086

My 1086 came with a set of Novak night sights that are long since dead. What's the best source for new night sights that aren't crazy expensive, or that haven't been sitting on the shelf for 12 years and already at half brightness? Would I just be better off trying to buy direct from Trijicon or Meprolight in a case like this?

I sent one of my 1076's back to S&W for installation of Novak night sights. You might also check with Trijicon, if the inserts are Trijicons they will re-lamp for approx 57 bucks.

In the mid to late 90s KY Imports was selling police turn in 1086s for $250 and extra mags were $25.
I was working at the time and several of the guys bought them.
I "brokered" the deal and they came to a friend's gun store so I went through them and picked out the best (an unissued) one.
I contacted S&W with its serial number.
It was from the Winston Salem PD.
I kept it for several years and shot and carried it occasionally.
About three years ago I sold off 70+ guns and it went on gunbroker.
It went for $850 plus shipping.
Of the 70+ I sold it's one of the few I regret selling.

I picked one up recently, it came with some Hogue rubber grips on it. Fortunately its easy to find the original straight S&W grips online still, so I just swapped those onto it. Boy does it feel much better without the huge thick grips on that thick frame to begin with.

I actually like the gooey, bloated Hogue on my 1006. I think the original grip looks MUCH better, but it is super slippery.

Even so, I may have to put my original back on just for the curb appeal.

Now the big fat Hogue on a 5906 is a deal breaker, that sucker is like a truck tire, just absolutely massive in size.

Funny enough, I put wood grip panels on my model 59, which makes the thing so fat that Andre the Giant couldn't grip it well. But it sure looks good.

For shooting, my favorite grip for the 59/659 is the Uncle Mike's. They are dead black, very rubbery but also quite thin. They have no visible logo or emblem of any sort. They look just fine (nothing flashy) but they grip extremely well and they are thin for what they are. Not as thin as the original thin plastic grip panels... but those original panels are lousy in just about every way.

I just bought a 1086. It is TFJ9000. It came from a retired detective's collection from Winston/Salem. So, I'm guessing it was originally sent there from S&W factory. I had no idea Winston/Salem police department issued them at one point.
