I just posted a similar thread for info On the P220 SIG. Lost in the Ozone made the comment that while he had SIGS, he liked the HK45 better.

So I guess I am looking for opinions on the HK45, and any info on a comparison between the SIG and HK if somebody is familiar with both

This is for a self defense home weapon

Thanks

Either pistol will serve you just fine

it is very hard to beat the P220 in almost any role

My first P220 was acquired in 1978 and I still own that one and shoot several others to this day

I am more a fan of the USP 45 than the HK45 but for those with smaller hands the HK45 is a fine firearm

I have large paws and prefer the greater magazine capacity of the USP family of pistols

The USP also has the advantage of handling 45Super with no modifications to the firearm

Any of these can be used suppressed

My suppressed USP45t sits near my bed stuffed with 15 rounds of 230 grain Winchester +P Ranger JHPs. Next to it is a flashlight and a 26 round magazine carrying more of the same ammunition

Most of the modern double stack HKs can use the magazine extension

That is a 20 round mag for the HK45 family of auto loaders

Maybe it's just here in Australia, but I don't understand why the HK45 is about $500-$600 dollars (AUD) more expensive then the HK USP's and P30's? Is the extra cash because Larry Vickers helped in the design?

I owned and carried both. Both the Sig 220 and the H&K .45 are good, accurate pistols. The H&K was the last duty weapon I carried. I liked the few extra rounds it provided. Both were accurate and totally serviceable. Get the one that suits you the best.

I like the .45 H&K USP series pistols a lot. They are lightweight with "plastic" frames, very reliable, and use 1911-style controls with a number of improvements.

I own three, illustrated here, all in .45 ACP caliber.

I also own a SIG P220 - a very reliable gun, but it lacks a safety other than the double action trigger - much like a revolver.

Long time owner of both Sigs and HK's. The double action on HK's is long and heavy. Sig DA is better. I prefer the LEM for HKs.

FWIW, I own both P220's and HK45's. The HK45 does fit better in my hand, and is very accurate, marginally more than the P220, but neither will let you down as far as that goes. As mentioned, the HK45 does have a heavier DA pull than the Sig, both have similar SA pulls. The HK45 does give you a couple of more rounds than the P220 if that's important to you, and also as mentioned, the LEM version is a good option as I have that on other HK pistols. To best evaluate, you need to handle both and shoot them if possible. Both are mechanically sound and will serve you well, but they do have a different feel from one another.

I don't own a SIG P220 nor an HK45, but I do own a USP45 Elite, which is without a doubt the finest pistol that I own, not to mention the most robust polymer framed pistol that I own.

Granted, it's not really a fair comparison because this is a Race Gun by H&K whereas the P220 and HK45 are strictly Duty Pistols, but still, if I had to choose one or the other, then I would go with the H&K. It's lighter and based on one of the most durable, reliable, and well-made pistols ever made.

I have an HK45 specifically for my house. I prefer a thumb safety and single action trigger pull. It’s built like a tank. When I got it, I went to the range taking my favorite 1911 along for comparison. I was very surprised to discover the HK45 shot just as well if not a tiny bit better for me.

There is one thing that took getting used to. The thumb safety seems unnaturally high on the frame relative to your hand. I only have a USP Compact for comparison among HKs, but that thumb safety is exactly where it should be.

Oh! I forgot all about the magazine release. Since I carried the USP for years, an HK mag release is totally natural for me. I use the middle finger of my strong hand to push it down. Might sound odd but I really like it. That said, it’s different from any other pistol.

The HK45 is closely related to the USP45 Compact, with many parts being interchangeable, and it uses the USP45 Compact's extended magazine (elephant foot) with a different floor plate (easy to swap).

The USP45 Compact is a very tough and proven gun, and even though there is a lot less actual real-life data about the HK45, I think it's safe to assume that it will perform and hold up equally well. For people looking for an ultra tough carry size .45ACP with modern ergonomics, the HK45 might very well be the best choice.

I would say that the Sig P229 in 40 S&W is probably the best self-defense pistol ever produced. It's not my favorite pistol but taking all things into consideration it is extremely capable. I seldom take mine to the range, it just hangs out in the nightstand with a 15-round magazine and 1 in the pipe. It's as accurate as anything I own and in 15 years has never had a hick-up! I do need to send it to Novak's for new night sights.

I know what you mean, there's something about the P229, just the right size for a handy compact that can still hold its own with the big guns, and .40S&W is obviously a very capable self-defense round. May I ask what 15-round mag/extension you're using? I only know of the 14-rounders from Mec-Gar, but their bulky extension kind of ruins the handy size of the P229 for me.

HK45 and P30 are two pistols from the brand I would love to get and sometime in the future...

Until that day and in the meantime a pair of USP one in .45 and the other in .40.
