Hello,

I just purchased a Smith & Wesson M&P 9mm
Barrel Length: 4.25". For carry, a Thumb Break Scabbard from Desantis.

Very uncomfortable to carry this gun with this scabbard. I am considering a shoulder holster. Suggestions? I want to be at least comfortable

Thanks,

The Thumb Break Scabbard from Desantis I find very large and uncomfortable. It has added leather just so if you want to tilt it. Also, it seems I always have to skip a pant belt loop to get it in the right position when sitting, standing, etc..

The Keydex models do look very interesting. They seem to fit tightly against your side and do not look bulky.

I have looked at a video on the blackhawk Serpa II (paddle model). Looks like you can easily move the holster around for comfort. Anyone have any luck with these???

I am not sure what type of holster is best for concealment (Side holster or shoulder type)

Shoulder Holster - Galco "Miami Classic".
Belt Holster - Lobo Leather Belt Slide.

Consider trying a Fobus Belt Holster. I recently began using one and like it very much. I have used Fobus Paddle Holsters for years with negative problems but now like the Fobus Belt type better.

I carried an M&P9 in a Comp-tac paddle for a while. Easy on/off, doesn't rely on belt loop position, carries close to the body for a paddle. Turn around time from Comp-tac is fast.

It appears you've been issued a newly minted CCW/CPL, congratulations.

This particular subject (i.e. "best for concealment"), is probably worthy of a new thread, so I'll try to be brief. If you had a chance to review my evaluation of PSS's kydex pancake holster, I attempted to list the holster criteria that was of most importance to me, one of which was conceal-ability. Based on, among other things, the type/size of your gun, the type of clothes you wear, the season and how you wear your (seasonal) clothes, will determine conceal-ability. It's a bit of chicken and egg issue, do you find the right holster for your clothes or do you change your clothes to match your holster? It's probably a little of both.

For me, since I'm physically active, I've chosen to go with a waist band type holster. Not only is it concealable, it rides very nicely no matter what I'm doing.

Thanks for the info guys. From what I have seen, there is no one single brand or type hat fits everyone.
The custom Keydex as mentioned above seems about as tight to your side as possible. My only concern would be how easily the pistol can be removed and inserted back into the holster.

Now I am leaning toward a paddle type for its flexibility. Which one?? Fobus seems to have a great reputation and Blackhawk has some good reviews in that it is fully adjustable (cant and belt size). I am still deciding guys and your input has been great.

Thanks

If you read my evaluation of the one that I got from PSS, it has a very definitive retention to it and it re-holsters nicely. BTW, the type of kydex that PSS uses is a bit thicker, and therefore, sturdier that many of the thinner kydex brands. IMHO, the fact that it is a "custom" holster makes the world of difference than the other "one size fits all" brands.

ok, I am sold on the Custom Kydex. I ordered one yesterday. Reason is that I cannot see aholster that fits tighter to your body (concealing) than this one. Looking forward to getting it.
Price for this custom was reasonable. Will let you know my review.

Thanks guys

I'm confident that you've made the right choice. Make sure that you provide Steve with all of your "physical dimensions" / "specs".

Please let me know how things work out for you.

Here's what I use.

I have an M&P .40 Compact and the Kholster has been great. In fact, I've owned 3 (I still have 2) for different guns. They come with a lifetime warranty even if you trim them to fit plus the price includes shipping!
