I have told not to use Hoppes 7 on model 642 as it destroys the finish. Is it ok to use it on my 648?

First, welcome to the forum. Lots of good people here. I have never heard of hopes ruining the finish on a 642 and have used it on mine for years without a problem. The only thing I wouldn't use it on would be a gun with a nickel finish.

Hoppes No. 9 will do NO HARM to Stainless or Blue guns. They only advise not using it on Nickel finishes. Back in the day when I did not know better I cleaned a few Nickeled guns routinely with Hoppes 9 and no harm was ever done. Now that I know better I would also say not to use it on Nickel, however I believe they would have to actually be soaked in the stuff to do any real harm. My Dad's Nickeled guns were cleaned with Hoppes 9 a "gazillion" times with no harm as well. Again, knowing better now I'd err on the side of caution and use something a bit milder.

I believe there is a warning from S&W not to use it on the new blued guns. I have used it on older nickle guns, 19-5 & 25-5, without any problems.

Hoppes Elite will not harm the finish, and it is odorless.
My wife stopped complaining about the smell when I clean
my guns now. I use it on all of them.

I used Hoppes #9 on 2 of my new S&W N Frames. Guess what? They were sent back to the Mother Ship for re-blueing, it made the finish cloudy. And I wasn't charged a cent. They even sent me a postage paid shipping label. But they did tell me to use only Hoppes Elite on all their blued guns. Guess what I'm using now?

Don't worry about solvents eating the finish, I handle mine like a new born and it came off all by itself. When it was new it had a blemish and was sent to s and w for refinish, did good job but soon started to wear off the back of the grip, and under the trigger guard. I recently asked them for a quote on refinish and it was over one hundred dollars. I would just as soon it be sold without any of that stuff they paint on, you would just get a dull grey color. Leaving mine like it is.

I'm old enough to remember Hoppe's #3. It smelled like Aqua Velva. Grew hair on hard rubber stocks. Turned nickel blue and turned blue green. As I recall it was available for only a short time.

I've used #9 for over fifty years, but now use it mainly for bore and charge holes. Rem Oil for most everything else.

Never heard of Hoppes#7. That might be something bad.
Hoppes#9? Never had a problem with any finish on any gun I've owned.

I also just bought Hoppes Elite and it replaced my Hoppes 9. For the first time my wife came down stairs when I was cleaning a gun and said "finally no smell" :) Even though for me I kind of miss the smell. ;)
