Despite all my travels I had never visted Houston before arriving yesterday. This is the yearly baseball trip organized by some of my hometown sports junkies who visit a different city each year. Last year was Omaha for the College World Series.

First, for an allegedly gun friendly state there are "no firearms' signs everywhere. Even the cab in which I rode from the airport had a "No Firearms" sign. :(

Yes, I know about the 30.06 requirement here but such a multitude of anti-gun signage is remarkable.

Research ahead of time suggested I would have limited availablity to CCW here so I didn't bring a gun. Per my research one can't drink a beer in Texas whilst CCW. Reckon Texas doesn't trust its citizens to maintain control of themselves.

That said, there are lotsa beerrooms here. I am downtown and there are at least nine (9) bars within a one block radius of my hotel. That's cool!!! :)

People are friendly, too.

Astros game tonight. Perhaps the Grand Prix race tomorrow. Who knows what on Sunday. Hope the bars are open!!!

More later...

Be safe.

Houston, Dallas and Austin aren't good examples of TEXAS.

Actually, I think they all have their own ways, and are part of Texas legend, culture, and Folklore as much as anywhere. All cities, and really, all rural areas, have their bad parts. Plenty of great things to see and do in each.

Where besides the cab are you seeing the "no firearms" signs?

As you seem to be aware, to be legally binding the signs must have a specific language and format. The only places I can remember seeing the binding signs are hospitals and bars that make 51% of their income from alcohol sales. There are some other locations prohibited by statute but the list is not long even if some are a bit silly.

All the restrictions were part of the compromises necessary to get the CHL law passed. Before that there was no legal way to carry a handgun in Texas, except for a vague part of the statute referring to overnight travelers. As a defense against prosecution it was seldom successful.

I should point out that the law was almost universally ignored. The weapons charge was a class a misdemeanor and most people just took their chances. So most of us view the new law as a vast improvement.

I also recommend Collector's. It's like a giant candy store for gun people. The prices are high but all the cool stuff is there right before your eyes.

As for the cabbie, you can bet HE had a pistol.

If you get a chance, check out Chuey's on Westheimer. The food is good and the people watching superb.

Enjoy your visit.

One must get their priorities straight. Pigs will fly before I would put going to a bar ahead of being armed. I like a beer now and then, and margaritas with my Mexican food, but if I can't drink (or do anything else) and stay armed - I don't do what is inconsistent with being armed.

The brewery tap, flying saucer, red cat jazz cafe should be a decent walk but it's supposed to be rainy. If you want a little classier hoof it over to Birrapouretti's.

If you like guns do NOT MISS COLLECTORS FIREARMS. Chances are slim you will ever see another like it!!!!!!!!!!

Chuy's and collector's firearms btw not walking distance but...good diversions. If you like a little more unusual flair and museum...take a peek at the beer can house at 422 Malone... Also not walking distance. Not much in this town is.
