How about a Mountain Gun thread

I ordered the Red Ramp and White Outline from S&W back when they still offered the RR. I had to drill the pin hole for the front blade and completely replace the rear windage adjustment screw along with the WO, but it was well worth the effort. You can still get the WO, but not the RR. I am now looking for a gunsmith to do the RR on the left one that would look factory.

My two .45 Colt 625MGs - top, my first-ever S&W, an '01 production -7 bought new by my wife for me 8/02. Bottom - a -6 I traded for several years ago.

And, apologies to the squeamish, my beloved 629MG, bought new 11/02, after it's worst-ever day at the range. Totally my fault, too. S&W sold me a standard 4" 629 for a song - and returned the one still-useful part - the barrel.

I could still get sob over that! I was lucky - no, blessed.

dc, thanks for the info. There is a gunsmith in Raleigh NC that does the RR inserts, think I will give him a try.

Whoa guys! What is, actually the definition of Mountain Gun? What are the features that it must have?
Seems to me that S&W can simply put the words on the barrel....Mt. Gun on anything they want.
MY definition is a gun that is compact, light, easy to carry, quick to get into action, with a shorter barrel, a powerdul cartridge, durable grips for a good grip when wet, muddy, dry...... or anywhere in between. It's not a fancy gun....it's a working gun!!!

An all around gun that's always around, for any situation.
By MY definition, I think my M-66-1
2 1/2" .357 Mag definitely qualifies. Maybe the lower limit of powerful cartridges.....it's up from there. But, it's definately compact with the K/L frame.
I don't really see the N frame as compact, but, I guess with the .41 and .44 Mag need it. Maybe with the shorter barrels...like less than 4".

So, a "Mountain Gun" is a "Mountain Gun" because it has "Mountain Gun" engraved on its barrel? Always wondered what a "Mountain Gun" was. Now I know.

Doesn't anyone know what makes a Mt. Gun .....a Mt. Gun??? Is it just a sales gimick? I don't buy into the PD "Personal Defense" line of crap, either!!!!

Any gun that you use for PD.......is a "Personal Defense" gun!!!

It never ceases to amaze me, how a a 3" or 5" barrel on any gun, suddenly makes it a "Colector's Item", and worth hundreds of dollars more. S&W sure knows how to brainwash the gun collectors!!!!

To me, a revolver is a useful tool, that can also be pretty. It's condition determines it's value........NOT some oddity in it's makeup.

It's the 4" tapered barrel. The .44 magnum with a much lighter barrel for carrying "in the mountains" was the idea. Then there was a desire for a version if .45 Colt and then other calibers.

Not really a marketing gimmick, but a genuinely created gun for a certain market that cried out for it.

I carried a 629 4" from 1981 till 1989 when I got my first 629-2 Mountain Revolver. What a difference it made especially chasing a pack of bear hounds around the mountains.
After I got my first Mountain Gun I never was satisfied with anything else. I guess I was part of the market that cried out for it and am glad S&W listened

How about a list of all of the mountain guns made by S&W excluding PC models. My 625 LC is one of my sweetest. After seeing the pics, I think that I want to collect more of them.

Doesn't anyone know what makes a Mt. Gun .....a Mt. Gun???

Besides having Mountain Gun on the right side of the barrel, MG's have the following characteristics:

4" lightweight tapered barrel
Round butt frame
Black ramp front sight with black rear
smooth combat trigger
.400 semi-target hammer
front edge of the cylinder is beveled

I believe this covers the bases on what makes up a MG.......not to mention the fact that these guns are pretty much the lightest steel frame version of their respective models.

My 629-4 MG was my first and would probably be my only handgun(if limited to one) due to the versatility of the 44Mag cartridge. That said, it would be painful to part with either my 625-4 Springfield Armory Commemorative 45ACP or my 625-6 in 45 Colt. Don't think for a minute that those "skinny" 4 inch barrels cannot shoot!
