How can I tell model number or serial number?

I'm a handgun enthusiast. Purchased a S&W M&P 15 today from an individual. All the box has on it is M&P logos. The handbook says M&P15 Centerfire Rifles. I was telling a friend I purchased one today and was asked what model. How would I go about finding that out? I don't even see a serial number on this? Other than the M&P15 stamp on the instruction manual, I don't see anything stating the specific model.

Welcome! Can you describe it - barrel length, furniture, accessories? What is printed on the end label of the box, specifically the SKU? That will tell you the model and variation.
