Local news here in Central Texas is reporting the officer in question is 60 years old, with 38 years of service.

That might help explain the revolver, if that's what he used. The 38 years of service could go a long way toward explaining steadiness and accuracy, too.

That is a valid statement for a soldier in combat. If you are close enough to use a sidearm, things are beyond bad, and not likely to get better. To kill the gooks in the wire, a rifle is best.

I know nothing about this specific situation. But in general :

Situational awareness , good tactics , cool under pressure, and skill with his weapon.

Makes me feel old to say it was aprox 22yr ago , but one of our officers scored a 76yd first shot hit on an escaped prisoner ( not one of ours ) in the midst of attempting an armed carjacking to further his escape. ( Ofc had Sig P226 9mm , the felon had M10 taken from the Correctional Ofc he knocked unconcious when he was uncuffed at the hospital for "treatment" .)

That's what it sounds like to me. Too busy shooting the place up to notice the cop that closed on them from the rear. Sounds like the cop had the element of surprise and was close enough to do what he had trained for. It's hard to know what his weapon was as some reporters call all duty weapons revolvers. In a close range engagement I'm going with a full sized pistol and a few spare mags every time.

TV news this morning stated the Officer is wanting to keep his info out of the news. Sad state of affairs in our world today our heroes have to stay undercover because he doesn't want to be threatened !!!! The comment they made was an auto pistol was used. Most all depts these days all officers use the same weapons as side arms. Old guys rule! As the tee shirts says. Salute to you Garland Officer.

It seems clear that the wannabe jihadis had very little if any training, got all excited and managed to hit an unarmed security guard in the leg. They were hoping for a Charlie Hebdo where they could slaughter a room full of sheeple.

Absolutely outstanding performance by the officer considering the guys were supposedly wearing BP vests!! I hope he doesn't get criticized for not hiding and calling in SWAT.

Long distance handgun shooting is not as difficult as most think. I shoot at several combat-style matches every month. We torture the spray and pray shooters with 30 to 50 yd. targets. I always make the shots at age 73.

Somehow we've accepted that a handgun is nearly a useless appendage on a cop's belt. I've had new agents try to take a rifle to the door on a knock-and-talk. I blame these competing shooting schools for the ridiculous though widely held belief that "the only thing a pistol is good for is to fight your way to a rifle".

What I meant by more sense is the news article originally stating a patrol officer was armed with a revolver while on duty. Nearly every force in the country (not all, I know) is using nothing but high cap mag fed semi-autos while in uniform. We went through decades being repeatedly told the LEOs were being outgunned on the streets and they have to have more firepower.

Of course the shots could be made with a revolver, even a single shot if he were bold enough and quick with the reloads.

The latest information states that the policeman was shooting a Glock .45 pistol, not a revolver.

The gunmen were already down and out of commission by the time the SWAT personnel arrived on scene.

The policeman isn't being named for fear of his becoming a target, along with his family members.

SWAT members claim they also fired at the gunmen, but that isn't verified.

Far as I'm concerned, this is a fine example of just what a calm and qualified pistolero can do under pressure. More power to him. I'd be interested to know what kind of ammunition he was using.

If he ever gets the weapon back, I'd retire it. It deserves a place of honor in his home, or maybe even down at the station house.

I'm amused that one report from a usually unreliable source says its a glock, so suddenly it becomes more believable. Not sure what a .45 Glock can do that your averaged revolver can't. OK, make it a garden grade 357. I know it goes against all current beliefs, but back in the day Texas cops used .45 Colt revolvers to great effectiveness. And those ratty old guns did the job.

Being relieved the gun was the holy Grock is just interesting.

Our local news (a liberal pile of it) reported the gun was his service revolver. When I heard it, I realized they were keeping the faith and have never reported anything gun related accurately.
