How long did it take to get comfortable carrying, and WHAT was your first carry weapo

First carry was a Springfield 1911 A1 and carried Mexican style. Had no issues or problems but soon sold it and bought a Sig P229R which was my second. As others have said, a good belt and holster make a world of difference. If I have ever accidentally exposed no one has ever mentioned it.

A good belt and holster are musts. About a year ago some guy's gun fell out of its holster at a Publix grocery store a couple of miles from my house. The thing went off, travel down an isle, and went into the meat dept as I recall. Luckily, no one was hit. I don't know if he faced any sort of charge.

What type of gun was he carrying, that it went off by striking the floor?

My first carry was my original 6906. Took me a while to get used to it. At first I was paranoid that everyone knew. After a while I realized that no one did. Fears went away, now I carry 24-7 and sometimes I even forget its there haha

I don't recall the newspaper account I read indicated the type of gun. Using google all I can find about it now is a reference from a forum.

This article tells a little different story than what I remember. Says it was a derringer and it was not holstered and he just dropped it. The story I heard was some guys gun fell from a holster. Perhaps, someone just inferred that from the news account. Couldn't imagine someone just taking his gun out at Publix.

I carried a P3AT for about a year and experimented with IWB holsters. I usually just dropped it in my back pocket in a Galco holster...Then I discovered "White Hat" out of Arlington, Tx. I now carry my 1911 .45 unless I am going to be in the truck a long time, then I carry my Commander sized .38 uper in the same holster. I still slip my P3AT in my pocket to go to the store.

First gun was Glock 22. Was a little self conscious until I got a good IWB(white hat maxtuck) and a gun belt (beltman). Got my CPL in June, and bought some size larger button ups to cover the gun in a crappy UncleMikes paddle holster. Was concious of the gun then. Just as it wag getting cold, my IWB came in and life was much better. I acquired as Glock 27 and BG38 that winter, now summer carry jn the crossbreed at 5 o'clock or remora at AIWB is a piece of cake.

Lots of good info here

The belt is under appreciated: you need a good one, along with a good holster. Best to get both from the same maker - order them together. I use only Del Fatti or Milt Sparks. Plan to spend $400+ and wait.

If you are very familiar with your handgun, it's manual of arms and your leather, you'll be comfortable and safe. That takes many hours over many days. Lots and lots of practice - 95% if it dry firing, before you ever carry outside your home.

That's a lot to pay for a belt and holster, in my opinion. I have a good belt and several good holsters, but even the most expensive holster when combined with the belt only came to about half that. What are you sporting sir?

I was comfortable with CCW immediately. I had a Kel-Tec .380 in my front pocket. It didn't print and the P3AT is the lightest .380 known to man. I wasn't worried about being accosted by a cop, as I was carrying in a legal manner. I was comfortable every which way, mentally and physically.

Smith and Wesson SD40VE. I have only carried for week or so. My instructor from my CCW class made custom holsters and for $50 for a crosstuck knockoff I couldn't pass one up. It seems very comfy. I hardly know I'm carrying it. I normally wear t-shirts so I do have to be careful
Some have complained about a rattle coming from the mag but I don't find it to be a problem as I carry change and keys so it is masked by these, I hope.

My 1st CC piece back in 1989 was a G19 worn cross-draw IWB 'mexican'. There wasn't much to choose from in the way of IWB holsters back then for the G19. (back then, it was the smallest, lightest 9mm on the public market)

Now-a-days, my edc is a Shield in a Galco PRO series pocket holster.

First carry was a S&W 66, about 1973. First carry with a Florida permit MANY years later was some variation of the 1911, if I remember correctly.

I cheated by carrying a tiny NAA Black Widow .22 Magnum. I was never uncomfortable carrying it. I sometimes carry a 7-shot S&W 351c, but the NAA is so easy to carry it's been a hard habit to break.

I carry a commander sized 1911 most of the time. Sometimes a full sized 1911, especially in the winter when I usually wear a sweatshirt or jacket. I also carry a 357 mag. snubby at times.

I think the first weapon I carried concealed was a Ruger p89. I had moved to South Dakota in 1990. I worked at a boarding school for Native American youth and had summers and holidays off, which meant that I did a lot of travelling back and forth between Arkansas and South Dakota each year. It was (and still is) relatively easy to get a CCW permit in South Dakota. I think I carried the P89 in an Uncle Mike's shoulder holster. It took a long time to get used to carrying concealed.
Since then, I've owned several weapons and holsters for concealed carry. One of my favorites was a Kahr K9 in a Galco IWB holster. Currently, I carry a S&W 642 (it took me a long time to warm up to aluminum revolvers and revolvers with internal hammers). I love my 642. It is lightweight and convenient. I carry when I travel to visit family in Arkansas or Colorado. I also work at a convenience store (I'm there now) and carry when I work there. We are a small town. But right now, there are hundreds of people from every corner of the country passing through on their way to Sturgis. I prepare.
About a year ago, I obtained a Browning Hi-Power. I traded my friend my Model 10-3 for it. I am not confident in carrying in condition 1. I promised to sell/trade it back to my friend if I ever parted with it. I really miss my K frame revolver. So, as soon as he purchases the Hi Power back, I will be in the hunt for a 2 inch or 3 inch K frame that will be my primary CCW piece.

Why not just keep the High Power and carry in condition 2?
Purchase a k-frame later, as finances allow (if you must have one). NO WAY I would sell a hi-power to purchase a k!
