How Long Will 3rd Gens be viable?

Carry my Shield 40. Range time my 411. Huge fan of Generation 3's. Everything possible that is great about them has been mentioned in this thread.

I really liked my 3913 but I did sell it after getting into 1911s. I could not shoot the 3913 as well as my 1911s and after I got a kimber 4 inch I never carried the 3rd Gen anymore. I wish I never sold any of my guns but I have like 20 pistols and I cant afford to keep a gun that I never shoot. Better it went to a new home. I sold it on this forum back in 2013.

If my 1st and 3rd gen guns ar nearly obsolete what should I do with all my pre war (WW2 and WW1) .32ACP and 380s that I have accumulated over the years? I shoot all of them but I don't carry them. I have 1 or 2 mags at most for any of them but I still consider them good guns to own and shoot.
Just as a starter their models of Colts , Walthers, CZs, Berettas, FEG,and Remingtons in the safe. All are viable and fun to take to the range occasionally. If the mags bite the dust I can usually find another if I am willing to pay for it. I just don't worry about that kind of thing until it happens. My life isn't dependent on any of them.

Question: I've got a 4506-1 in excellent condition. Hasn't been shot in 10 years. I'm thinking of parting with it. Only drawback is that I had S&W do some laser engraving on the frame. Also had "Murph" lasered on the slide. What's your opinion of value. If you worthy forum members think the gun is devalued, I'll just keep it. Put it in the safe next to my Magnum Research BFR 45-70 (I use that for pigeon control).

While I don't think you've devalued your 4506-1 (especially in today's market), I'm sure you realize, with any sort of personalization, you have narrowed the market to those folks who are comfortable with the customizations or are capable of removing the markings by bead blasting.

My experience is that S&W laser engraving is no where near as permanent as cut engraving and can be polished or blasted away.

As to current value, I would say it is the same as an unmolested :D model.

It will just take a little longer to sell.

To me it lowers the value. Years ago I went to look at a couple of guns for sale listed in the local paper. He'd had a guns engraved with biblical sayings and his name. He got made when I told him that to me it lowered value. After all, he'd paid good money to have the engraving gun, how could his gun be worth less?

I'll certainly agree that a more permanent method of customization can adversely effect the value of any collectible.

But with the rather easily removed (IMHO) embellishments to the O.P.'s pistol, in today's market, I don't think he will suffer.

Neither do I think he will gain from the engraving, unless another "murph" sees it and loves it!

Appreciate all the input. I picked up a nasty 6906 last Saturday. It came with only one 10 round mag. Another forum member gave me a tip on some mags. It cleaned up really well. I wished I'd picked up the 5906 that was sitting beside this 6906. Each gun was $ 350 OTD.

Back in the day a lot of my friends and fellow officers had 469 and 6906's. I liked them but ended up carrying a P228 instead.
