I find myself the proud owner of 2 Top break Revolvers( sight unseen) 1 has US on the grip and the other S&W.
Long story short, somebody passed away, I got a call, their mine because she doesn't want them in the house and I was good kid. What she don't know

Both have 38 on the barrel, they came from a man in his late 90's.
SO how do I tell which 38 it is, how many are there? Can I measure the chamber depth, what am I looking for.
I don't mean to so vague, but thats all got for now. I plan on taking a much needed sabbatical starting next week, so I'm picking them up then. I'll post pic's when I get back.
Yes, I plan on shooting them. Yes, black powder.

Thanks for any info

They are, most likely, both cal 38 S&W. One easy test is to try 38 S&W ammo in them. It is slightly larger in diameter than other 38's like:
38 Short Colt
38 Long Colt
38 S&W Special
So, if it fits, that is likely it.

If they're top-breaks, its a pretty good bet they're .38 S&W. The .38 S&W, incidentally, is identical to the .38 Colt New Police round, and the two are interchangeable.

If the guns are in shooting condition, I don't think you need to keep it to blackpowder. The .38 S&W cartridge is loaded to blackpowder specifications.

Thanks guys, from what I was told they look to be in good condition. I'm really looking forward to shooting them, if possible.
Not a bad deal for a few summers of cracking cain and minding my manners..
