Was just wondering. for self defence how many firearms are you allowed to own in your guys states. Been reading on the forum and looks like most of you guys own few more than one firearm. Here in south africa we only allowed one firearm for self defence and then say one for sport shooting, one for hunting etc. Then on avarage you wait over two years to recieve your licence thats if it doesn't get denied. Is that more or less how it works over there?

At this time, I only have 167 guns for self defense but have bids in on a couple more and looking at a nice piece at a local store I may buy.

Now I only carry one gun at a time but I change up from time to time.

In Arkansas the only restriction on carry guns can happen if you qualify with a revolver when qualifying for your permit. If you qualify with a revolver that's then that's all you can carry legally. If you qualify with a semi auto you can carry either a revolver or semi auto or both.

As far as the number of hand guns you can own that is only controlled by your desire and your check book.

Things are a lot different here. We can have as many guns as we can afford and it took a total of 2 1/2 weeks to get my CWP

In PA I can own as many as I want and carry as many as I want. We don't have to list on our carry permit the guns we are permitted to carry. I think it took about a month to receive my permit but in PA I don't have to take a course, like I did for VA and FL.

We don't have to catagorize firearms to different tasks the way that you apparently have to do there in South Africa. In some states you have to list the firearms you might carry on the permit, or are limited to having just one firearm on your person (New Mexico has that restriction, for example)however Kansas isn't one of them and, with a CCH permit you may carry concealed on your person however many handguns you feel like.

I Texas you may own as many as you like and you may carry as many as you like, as long as you can conceal them.

You guys are so lucky over there. Things are way different here when it comes to firearms. And with our new firearm law where you have to re-apply for your licence most people handed in their guns to be destroyed. When you apply for a licence or permit can you guys get denied for that licence if they feel your reason to wanting it isn't good enough?

In most of the states if you can own a handgun getting a CCW permit is not restricted. Have a few states where it is difficult and a couple of the bigger cities in those states are almost impossible.

Here in florida personal self defense is the only reason you have to give.

Not in Michigan.

Sounds like you guys are headed for tyranny and perhaps some mass ethnic killing in your country. South Africa sounds like a good place to be from.

Alabama requires no violent crimes in background check, 20 bucks (annually) and a weeks wait from the Sheriffs Dept.

Maine, like other "shall issue" states doesn't require a reason. You apply and as long as you're not disqualified by your background check you get it. And, because Maine is still in America, we can have all the guns we want and carry them too.

Sorry to hear how it is in S.A., sounds a lot like New York, Chicago, and California.

well I can legally carry as many as it takes for the weight of em all to knock me over, I generally only carry one to two, but if I have to go to a rough spot in town I will carry 3, my 1911, my SW99 in .40, and my 638 with +p loads, better to have them and not need them right?

In S.A. you have to add a motivational letter with reasons why your wanting a firearm for self defence, yet you cannot use the word self defence in there or your application will get denied. We had a case where the dad owned a firearm and when his daughter applied she got denied. reason being was that because she still staying at home her father can defend her.

As you can probably tell by the responses you've received, carrying weapons in the US is largely regulated by the states. There are big differences between Texas and say New York.

I can't speak for the other states, but in Texas why you carry a handgun is your business. You do not have to give a reason. Looking at the restrictions you have mentioned in SA makes my blood run cold.

In NM, only 1 CC at a time, no B.U.G....Ownership? As many as you want.....

There are lunatics in this country that want to limit the number of handguns one can buy monthly. I believe NJ has such a restriction but in the rest of the un-occupied Free States, one can own as many as one can purchase, as one poster said, limited only buy the amount of funds available. Here in Texas it has been said that each man and woman will admit to at least ten guns, but that is probably not accurate at all. I hold concealed carry license in several states which allows me to carry in a total of 38, of our 50, but since I am a retired LEO and maintain my currency according to Federal Law I am supposed to be allowed to carry in all States...I have been told that NY, Illinois and Wisconsin won't honor the Federal law but I haven't confirmed that nor put it to a test....as soon as governments ban guns or limit them, its citizens are in danger of a totalitarian government....Liberty is the government fearing its citizens, Tyranny is the citizen fearing the government and we are well on our way to the latter here in the good ole' USA.....my humble opinion anyway...

North Carolina here and no restrictions on how many you own or carry. You have no questions re why you want a concealed carry permit on your application.

In Ohio:

CHLs are "shall issue". If you meet the qualifications and pass the background check, you get one. You don't need a reason.

You can carry any handgun you want and as many of them as you want, openly or concealed. You don't need any license to open carry.

You can carry a loaded handgun in a vehicle ONLY with a CHL (or recognized equivalent).

have south african gun laws changed in the last 20 or so years? i don't recall that there was a problem owning more that 1 type of gun at a time.

In Texas if you shoot your qualification test with a revolver that is all you can carry concealed. Use a semi-auto and you can carry either. Must go through classes, take a written and shooting test to get a concealed carry permit. You can own as many firearms, and ammo for them, as you can afford. The only exception is full auto weapons, sawed off shothguns, and dangerous devices such as grenade launchers, morters etc. Then you have to deal with the feds and jump through hoops.

In the State of Tennessee, we don't have a concealed carry permit. We have a Handgun Carry Permit. The distinction is that the weapon(s) may be either concealed or open carried. There are restrictions against carrying any weapon in certain places such as court offices, federal buildings, and some others.

There are no requirements to carry a certain type of pistol or revolver, or caliber, or how many you may carry at one time. As someone has said, you may own as many as your wife will let you, and carry all of them if you are able.

There are some local restrictions as well. Cities may "opt out" of allowing weapons in certain parks for instance. The decision on whether or not to do that has been very acrimonious to say the least, many cities ban carry, many more do not.

SA is soooo beautiful!!!

Waldo,

It was my good fortune to have a month long visit to your country in August 2001, just before the World Trade Center attack took place...it is a stunning place. Much of the terrain looks very much like south central Texas...

In the time I was there the friend I was visiting took me on a driving tour of most of the country, Joburg, Durban, Cape Town, Kimberly...thousands of miles in a month. The only area I didn't get to see was the northeast where Kruger National Park is...maybe one day I'll make it back.

If there is anywhere on earth that there should be CC Permits issued it is SA. CarJacking is one of the major national sports it seems. Armor car robberies (know as cash in transit robberies) occur daily often with deadly results. Home invasions....and a lot more.

When I was there getting a CC permit was fairly simple. It was MUCH harder to buy a rifle, even a bolt action, than a handgun. I believe I was told it was up to just before I arrived it illegal to defend oneself with a shotgun...

I have lost touch with my friend but at the time he owned a very large security officers school in Durban. His school graduated ...are you ready for this....3000+ security officers a year...and there were 8 schools in the area at that time... The graduates were everything from unarmed parking lot guards to personal body guards. Anyone in any kind of security work had to have a certificate from a school to apply for a job....and there was LOTS of work.

The last I spoke to him he said things were changing... The government would just not respond when someone tried to renew their CC license. I am not sure how this effected professionals like Cash-In-Transit drivers who work for companies, but for your average citizen it meant not carrying or carrying illegally....

As to your question, here in New Hampshire, we are a "shall issue" state and the permit "SHALL" be issued in two weeks or an explanation of why has to be sent to the applicant. You can own and carry as many guns as you can afford...

In Massachusetts, CC Permits are issued by the Chief of Police and if he doesn't want to or just give them to his friends he has that right...

I wish you and your beautiful country luck...I am afraid we here in the USA may need some also in the not so distant future...

Bob
