How many primary carry and HD vs. toys do you take to the range on a given trip?

Do you usually shoot a bunch of different models on the same trip or do you stay narrow and shoot mainly your top choices for carry and for home defense...with only the occasional toy from the safe mixed in?

It may not sound like a big deal, but I'm probably not improving as much as I could because I'm always bringing a bag of stuff to shoot.

Becoming pretty good with many, but not REALLY good with any.

How do you divvy up your time and balance having a little variety and fun with improving your skills for all important self defense?

Three: Ruger Mk II for .22 accuracy practice. Colt Combat government for home protection practice and S&W 642 because it takes two hands to shoot it well.

Sticking with just one gun will do the most for accuracy, but I've taken as many as four out at a time.I just take one or two now as the novelty of cleaning em wore off long ago.

Really it depends on how much time I want to spend cleaning. Two or three, the wife will usually take only one. If we shoot it we clean it. Usually two autos and the rest revolvers. I really enjoy the revolver more. The 44 (mag or special) is my favorite caliber the next being 45 acp. The wife is hooked on the 40 S&W.

We take the whole armory with us: my two .45s and my wife's 9mm.

I concentrate on honing my skills with the SW1911 Pro, but feed the Gen. 3 at least 50 rounds each outing to insure I continue to enhance my proficiency with both pistols. I never know which one might save my life and be in a holster when it's "go time."

I take one most of the time. The one is my S&W M&P40c, my carry pistol. If I take another, I will shoot the lowest caliber first. I try to fire 100 to 150 rounds through the M&P twice a month.

Guns are sights, grips and a trigger - the parts you interact with. Everything else in between doesn't matter much. I just don't see swapping out making that much a difference in improving. Practice with one should help nearly as much as practice with the intended gun.

Depends if l'm goin by myself or meeting one of my shootin buddies. I ALWAYS take my '52 K-22 for warmin up. Today l also shot my 65-5 3" bbl for sport. I usually shoot my CCW, sometimes it's a 4006. Sometimes it's a M60-9. ...and sometimes it's a HK USP .45 Compact.... What can l say....I'm an equal opportunity carrier! :D

I agree with Arjay. Really working with one gun is the way to improve.

But to answer the how many question, a lot depends on how much time I have. If I just have an hour, I may take two guns, but sometimes I end up shooting only one. I never take more than four, just because no matter how much time I have, I will wear out and be wasting time and ammunition after I have worked my way through four guns. No point in going on. And, as Arjay points out, then there is all that cleaning to do! :)

Usually two... a 9mm and a .22lr for practice. Three if you include my EDC weapon. Sometimes, if I know that I've got plenty of free time to spend at the range I'll bring along a couple more (total of 5)... but that is more the exception than the rule.

I usually take 3. Ruger LC9 for 20 or 30 rounds, Les Baer 9 for most shooting, probably around 100 rounds, then finish with the M&P 9, probably 50 rounds just to keep it fresh ;-) Since I reload, I'm usually tired of chasing down my empties by then. The LC9 throws them all over the place. I go 1 or 2 times per week.

Depends on the amount of people/friends/buddies. I have taken one to fifteen. I'm retired and don't mind cleaning, gives me more alone, personal time with my loved ones.:p

Usually 2, sometimes 3. I always shoot my primary ccw gun, a model 442, first and put at least 50 rounds through it. Last time at the range I put 100 rounds through it. Shooting 2 handed, 1 handed, off handed and New York reload with my wife's 66-3 on my right side and my 442 on my off side in a pocket holster. Sometimes I'll take my double barreled coach gun just to blast away for fun.

I guess since our pistol range is about 100' out our
backdoor you could say I "take" all of them. ;)

Usually we / I start out with 2 but if we have others over who start asking
about certain models I can end up making numerous trips back & forth to
the house getting guns they are asking about so they can give 'em a try.

I've ended up with at least 10 of them out there
at times, making for a looong night of cleaning.

Not shown are our target stands.........

EDITED to ADD:

Here's where the guns tend to line up.
On this day I was out there by myself so there's only 2 ready to go. :)

At least two. I like to warm up with a .22, then shoot larger calibers... and then finish with a .22

I take the two I have so far :), an M&P 22 and a Shield 9mm. I usually start and end with the .22, as it's cheap to shoot.
