I take the two I have so far, an M&P 22 and a Shield 9mm. I usually start and end with the .22, as it's cheap to shoot.

I will usually not take more than two. I like to shoot each gun proficiently and I take my time - not a race here. I'll usually take a .45 & a .22 or a .38 & a .22. Sometimes I take only a rifle. There are also times I only will go to the Range to shoot Trap & Skeet so one shotgun accompanies me.
The only time I'll take more than two is for testing purposes if I have just completed some work on multiple guns.

I like to sample a lot of the different flavors in the safe. My wife almost aways comes too and she is a 2 or 3 gun at most person. She always comments on how I have to bring half the herd every time.
To me shooting is fundamentals. It shouldn't matter what you are shooting, it is how you are shooting. I do like to shoot my DA revolvers in the middle of range time as I am warmed up and not tired out yet. They are the most challenging.
But on a given day I may shoot .22, .380, 9mm, .38 spl, 357, .45acp and 10mm with the occasional .44mag thrown in.

The wife and I always shoot together and we try to stay with our carry weapons. On occasion we will take something else such as a rifle or shotgun to stay current with our home defense weapons.

I'm fairly new to handgun shooting. As such I'm very focused on improving and getting the basics down cold. So for me its always my EDC M&P FS9mm. I also usually know the drills I want to run on myself before I get there. I usually go for just one hour and use 100-150 rounds. I try to go once per week. I also do some dry fire practice and target acquisition at home in the evenings.
It's funny you guys mention cleaning. I too find it strangely soothing and relaxing.

I have half a dozen handguns I rotate in my EDC. Another half dozen or so that are just for plinkin'. I'f I'm not taking any shoulder weapons I'll take at least one from each category. If I'm taking any long guns I'll probably just take one from the EDC. I like to stay current with any gun I'm carrying.
Since the cost of ammo has gotten so high I have been having occasional .22 days. I have 4 handguns and one rifle in .22lr and I can spend all day at the range with them and not tear my hand and shoulder up for about 15 bux. Can't do that with any center fire calibers.
As far as the cleaning of guns (I'll include fishing and hunting gear) I have always enjoyed the getting ready and the clean up after of all hunting/fishing/shooting outings. It's part of the deal for me and I enjoy seeing that my toys get good TLC.
When I was young I couldn't afford good stuff and had to settle for junk. Now that I CAN afford to have quality I make darn sure I take care of it in memory of the lean years. I just could not close my eyes in sleep with a dirty gun or reel or tent or waders etc laying around. My friends tease me and tell me that I take better care of my toys that I did my kids when I was raising 'em. Well now that's and exaggeration but not much or one.

I shoot at an indoor pistol range and usually with my shooting buddy, so I generally take two plus my carry gun. We'll often swap off. Combination of defensive shooting at 7-15 yards and bullseye at 25 yards.

When I "hit" the range, I take at least four of my herd with me, and I make sure to give them all equal time. Last week, I took these four:
1) Shield .40
2) model 60 38 sp. 2" no dash
3) model 66-1 2 1/2"
4) Sig P228
A good time was had by all !!

Maybe trying a new load, I might have made a change to it, sometimes a new one I'm getting a feel for or sometimes one that's just been in the safe for too long and needs to get out and play. But whatever the reason, this one will be my primary focus for the day.
Often one of the others will be a similar gun to compare the 1st one to.
Usually a .22 of some kind. More often than not it'll be a Model 18. Great gun for practicing DA skills.
And usually one of my 1911s.
Just because I take 4 doesn't necessarilly mean I shoot them all. I have been known to get pre-occupied with one or two and not shoot the others.
But never more than 4 because I'm just too lazy to clean more than that many.

A drill someone mentioned to me was practicing emptying a mag out of your primary carry and then immanently picking up a mk II and firing it. You'd be surprised how many people overcompensate for kick on the mkII.
I generally take three.
1.) SIG P226 in .40 S&W - I generally carry this while at the range.
2.) One of a number of .22 semi-autos or revolvers.
3.) One of a number of .44 - .45 semi-autos or revolvers.
Maybe 100 rounds of .22 and another 50 of centerfire per session.
Once in a while one of my .22 rifles will go also.
