How many mags per gun do you consider enough? I never gave it much thought before the Clinton AWB, only having 2 or 3 per gun. But after the sunset of the ban I made sure I had 10 to 15 per gun that held over 10 rds. I often wondered how others handle this. Plus with the gen 1/2/3 mags getting harder to find how many of those should be tucked away? I almost sound like a prepper .

I have at least six magazines per gun. And usually 8 to 10 (or more). Some of my friends consider it an odd thing to do, but I like it.

Well, the barrel is the heart of any firearm, but the magazine is the heart of the auto system.

How well does the system work without the heart? How easy is it for mags to go from available (now) to unobtainium?

For me it all depends on the gun and its primary use, I like a combat pistol with at least 5 loaded magazines, one in the gun 4 on the belt. A small compact CCW pistol needs two, a range gun needs 10 or more, a hunting gun only needs one. My revolvers don't need any :)

For serious autopistols I keep no less than 6. One in the gun, 4 in pouches, one 'resting' in my kit. These days I have accumulated serious guns based upon 'platforms'. These platforms are often defined by their magazine interchangeability. I have Glock 22, SiG 220 and S&W 39 series.

I have 10

I bought a 1006 in the late 80s early 90s from a guy I worked with. It came with 13 mags, I sold three to another guy I work with who had a 1006 (silly me).

I shoot IPSC and rotate the mags through the day so each one gets at least one use. I keep one loaded with Hornady 200 gr XTP when the 10 is in the box.

I was lucky in that the guy I bought from had a metric ton of stuff (reloading die, brass, bullets etc) that he dumped when he went to a 1911 .45 for IPSC.

When I buy a new one I'll probably get a total of 5 or 6. That's enough for me.

I remember the ban too. The only magazine fed guns I own now are 9mm Glocks and .223 AR's. I have more mags than I'll probably ever need for both but I still pick them up when I find a decent price on them. The thought being that if it gets bad I'll have them and if it gets real bad I'll be able to sell a few for some ridiculous price.

Before I consolidated platforms and calibers my rule of thumb was at least six factory mags per pistol. This would allow me to shoot a steel or USPSA match with that gun if I wanted and allowed enough to rotate through without beating any two or three up over time.

So if I have 24 guns and I should have 10 to 15 magazines per gun.... I need 240 to 360 magazines??? At $30 each, that would be about $10,000 in magazines.

I don't have that many. The most I have is four.

With 24 guns 4 mags with each at $30 apiece that's $1440 spent on additional mags assuming each gun came with 2. I asked how many is enough and for you its 4, I never said you need 10/15 per gun, I said like to have. I have 20 Beretta 92 mags for my 4 92 variants 2 came with each gun , so I have bought 12 over the last 10 years. I have a XD9 that came with 3 mags and that's all I have for it cause I am not fond of it. Know one ever said this was a cheap hobby.

I'm always on the look out for 3rd gen mags, but I don't have a set number. A couple of times a year, I'll go to a big box sporting goods store that has a lot of used magazines and rummage through the bin. Generally I'll find a fee used 3rd gen mags a bargain prices. My next project will be to order some springs just in case.

I have 4 for the gun I compete with but can't see buying a bunch for no reason. I'd rather have more guns over accessories. Pretty conservative though compared to others.

No such thing as too many. If one breaks the rest of the parts can be used as parts for other mags that might wear out. If one mag get a dent or cracks well the spring, floor plate and follower can be used as parts.

AK47- about 30 mags but I have 3 rifles need more
AK74- about 20. need more
FAL - about 15 need more
AR - about 5 need more
Saiga 12 - 1(5) 3(10) and 1(12 drum)

M&P45- 6 need more
SW5946 - 5 for 2 handguns (im ashamed of myself) need waaay more
G19/17- 3 for the 19 and 3 for the 17. Which makes 6 for the 19. Need more
1911 about 6

The answer depends on if the magazine in question is in production and easily available. Also if it is a carry gun or a casual shooter

For example you will always be able to buy a 1911 magazine. B92 and S&W 59/459/5906 mags are not a problem in the foreseeable future.

In that case 3 - 6 is comfortable to me. Though I usually own 10 or more just because I always buy a few if there is a good sale.

If we are discussing a out of production/hard to find magazine like a 45ACP P9s or a Steyr GB I would like 8-10

I currently have four each for my three pistols. However, the 1911 aftermarket is rife with "better" mags. If my current holster obsession ever turns to aftermarket 1911 mags, I'll probably have a dozen by this time next month. :)

However, four's my target, and that's what I've got for my 4567, 1911, and SD9 VE.
