How many Moon Clips is too many

I have five 45acp revolvers. They are my favorite shooters. I've had and used the same moonclips for years. Probably about 75 of them. The reason they last is because of the BMT tool. No bending or mutilation. I forgot about the price of it after the first time I used it. BTW, I have no connection to the company. Just a recommendation for a great product.

The BTM tool is the absolute best way to load clips. I gave my other tool away when I got mine. For unloading them I took some 3/4" brass round stock, drilled a 11/2 hole in it and knurled the on end, turned it down a bit slightly longer than the length of a case then took off enough of the end to leave a short section maybe 1/8" longer. Stick it over a case twist and the case falls in either my hand or a coffee can. I can have a clip empty in a few seconds.

After hyena mentioned the moonclips for the 640 Pro, I decided to go take some measurements to see how flimsy the rimmed cartridge clips are. Not only are they thin, but the amount of metal in the “web” that forms the center of the clip is very insubstantial and easy to bend. The TK clips for my 640 Pro are only .022” thick with a .025” web. My 10mm clips on the other hand are .035” thick (TK and my “brand X” were the same) and the webs are substantially thicker at .048” for brand X and .069” for the TK’s. Like I said in my post earlier, I do keep a moonclipped charge in the 640 Pro when I’m CCWing it because I do like how quickly and efficiently I can eject the rounds. I see this as the only advantage of having a J frame cut for moonclips. The K and N frame .357’s probably use a thicker, stiffer clip like the 610 does, so it wouldn’t be an issue. Perhaps some members with larger framed .357 revolvers can verify that.

All the moon clips for rimmed calibers are .022 to .025 and need to be handled with some degree of care. This is because the groove in the brass is small. The extractor groove in rimless calibers is wide and deep, and can have more substantial clips.

I actually have no idea how many I have.. hundreds? they stack easily in old pill bottles when unloaded an go into my leather sack when loaded.. and I also don't waste range time loading and unloading.. and have some Rimz if I want to try an ammo flavor I didn't anticipate.

I have a dozen demooner in this idea group. Those are 7" long pieces of 5/8" OD (everyday) copper pipe. They have the "Tooth" on one end. The 6 empty 45 cases all fit inside, and just slide out into the empty coffee can.

Brownell's makes a very nice one with a nice screwdriver hamdle on it. Retail: $20, I see them often NIB for $10

To load, I line six rounds in a row in a groove in a piece of wood. (usually a scrap of crown mold) and use a 7/16" down rod 7 or 8" long. The dowel rod through the center hole pushes the clip on the case. With every thing ready to go, Loading a full clip takes 15 seconds or less, demooning take 10 seconds or less!

The loaded clip carry racks are great looking, but at 12 rows of 4 is only 48 in an ammo can, loose in the high 80's!

A topic that comes up every spring! But to me it never gets old.

Moon clips are far cheaper and way faster than any speed loader. They really come into their own with the short fat rounds like the 45 ACP. I made 2 9mm K frame cylinders and they work great there also. But the only supplier I have found for K frame 9 mm clips is TKC and they are very proud of them I think something like 10 for $75

I have 3 different TKC mooners and they work great I’m going to get the one you have one day

You don't use it for unloading them? It's a cinch. One twist and the clip is empty.

Just as a heads-up. The clips (45acp) from Revolver Supply have worked with every brand of ammo I've used (at least 10 different makers). They are very high quality steel. They are priced @ $13.80/10. TK Custom prices theirs at $12.95/5. Just sayin'.

That’s a good deal but my problem is with my 25-13 I had TK cut my cylinder for moon clips and I did not tell them to cut it “factory” moon clips so they cut it for there so I’m just keeping everything TK
