How many rounds of 0.223/5.56 you need?

In a situation like the riot in LA in 1992, how many rounds of ammo you need for self-defense? I have 450 rounds of such rifle ammo and 600 rounds of 9mm, and 350 rounds are coming. I will not shoot much from now on and save these!!!

I mean people have 50,000 rounds, thatis too much unless you want to make money. REalistically how many is needed? Thanks and god bless!

Here's a thought for the op.

How long do you need to survive or defend yourself and family?
Against what type of threats?

Natural diaster(Hurricane Sandy is a good example)After 3-5 days your neighbors may no longer be your friends.

Civil unrest or other disturbance.

Your ability to withstand these situations is dependent on your stock of supplies. When your out of ammo, water and food...well.

How much do I need? When you get right down to it I don't NEED any of it. But since I'm a citizen in good standing of this country I want what I have.

But I shoot to practice and I shoot for competition. I go through thousands of rounds a year.

Some who compete more seriously than I go through 10's of thousands of rounds a year.

How many Bic pens should one buy a year? How many Tampons? That's none of my damn business.

Question is... why does there need to be some limit? The Aurora guy planned his deal for months. Lets say Walmart had a 2 box a day limit and he only went in once a week for 2 months trying not to call attention to himself.

That's 160 rounds if he's buying the 20 rd box, and 800 if he's buying the 100 bulk packs. At a minimum that was enough to fill his Beta mag, 2 30rd mags, and some to spare.

And someone really planning a crime would be hitting several sources if trying to dodge an imposed limit, or having other people buy it for them.

The 12 million, or whatever, people in the greater Los Angeles area were mostly not effected by the 1992 riots. That was small potatoes. Most roads were clear. Most of the electric grid was fine. The men in Beverly Hills blocked access roads with vehicles and layed rifles on car seats. The police were too busy to object if they wanted to. Rioters drove on by looking for easy targets. Korea town was not that lucky.

It depends on the level of gridlock in and out of the area. Remember the New Orleans hurricane. Remember when many of the Police took their families and abandoned New Orleans. The courts shut down and they all left. The jail was evacuated, prisoners released. If a policeman arrested anyone there was no place to take him. Read about that if you want to know the problems. Being near fresh water to drink is a big big deal.

Nuclear weapons - really major earthquake - That last east coast Hurricane if it was a little bigger, many things could shut down a coastal big city. Many could get landlocked against the salt water barrier. Having a hand pump well for water can be a big deal.

One guy learned to make a birch bark canoe because he could repair it going north? For most of us that is meaningless.

The more I have, the more secure I feel. Realistically, if you plan on needing 10s of thousands of rounds for self defense, I hope you're real good and/or real lucky 'cause if you are going to be in all those fire fights, you'll probably die long before you run out of ammo.

A Black Man who was in his house trying to sleep one night, during the 1992 riots was ask what he did when he realized his house was on fire. His answer was “I grabbed my gun, my shoes, and my wife, in that order, and I got out of the house”.

The houses effected by floods then looting after various hurricanes never mentioned gathering ammo - more information needed. Not really prepared for what they were facing perhaps.

Flooded homeowners often ended up in attics cutting through the roof. Maybe near Oceans one needs gun and ammo in attic with water and dry food? Some people now put axes in attic. New Orleans got all the media attention but the flooding extended to Florida.

I think I read that Custers men each had 150 rounds of ammo? He left most of the bullets back in the wagons where they were well guarded. Never do that.

I honestly don't see a problem. I mean if you can afford to buy it, then buy it. Someday, you or a neighbor in need might actually need it. I don't need canned food storage, but after living through hurricane Wilma when I was in Florida, I learned my lesson the hard way. I never want to be in that position again.
