How much trouble would I've been in...?

It's never a smart idea to carry a gun in such a way that it "prints" visibly enough that an LEO would take notice.

That Arizona has no law regarding concealed carry, is, if you ask me, exactly what the writers of the Constitution had in mind. The Constitution makes no presumption that one group of men should have the ability to decide that another group should be denied the right to bear arms.

That is simply not true, there are several that deal specifically with CCW. Arizona has a brand new law that permits concealed carry "If" you are legally able to own a gun, "If" you do not try to carry in any establishment serving alcohol and a number of other restrictions. In addition Arizona has statues that provide for the issuance of concealed carry permits. If you have a permit you can carry in an establishment that serves alcohol so long as you do not partake. With an Arizona CCW permit you can be in concealed possession within 500 feet of a school etc., etc..

Arizona is one of the most gun friendly states in the nation but rest assured we have many gun laws especially when it comes to concealed carry. Arizona is an open carry state though you rarely see it except in rural areas. Keep in mind that Arizona as the 48th state in many ways still retains that frontier mentality and woe be unto the politician that forgets. Our gun laws almost make up being stuck with having John "I never considered myself a maverick" McCain. (o;

Taking a walk in the neighborhood, armed but without ID, ain't no big deal. Chances of a anyone seeing or noticing your weapon are unlikely and if they did probably still no issue.

Taking a walk in the neighborhood, armed but without ID, and then have to use your firearm . . . all of a sudden it's a big deal! At best it will add to the hassle of the already intense situation which required you to use your firearm in the first place.

Faulkner, +10, you nailed this thread down nicely.

Actually, at worst it will add to the hassle. Forgetting to carry your permit and ID won't miraculously turn into a crime simply because you acted in self-defense. Investigation will quickly reveal the status of your license. The issue here was never about the likelihood of getting caught, but what would happen if one did. If it's a noncriminal violation as in my jurisdiction and others, that's it. The justification of a defensive shooting is a whole other story, of course.

Mind you, this doesn't mean one shouldn't carry the permit and ID at all times while packing. :D

I had something similar happen this weekend. :o
I got somewhere and realized I had left my wallet in the other car. I was driving a car without my liscense, carrying concealed without a permit, and driving a vehicle that wasn't mine (it was my father-in-law's). All I could think on the way home was that if I get stopped for anything it was going to be a very long evening and I would probably wind up in handcuffs for at least at little while. Not a good feeling.

Sounds like a Bar Coded ID stapled to the forehead would be an easy solution. ID, all licenses and permits would be readily available. My 2 dogs have had ID implants for years.........

I'll sit out on the discussion of AZ's now non-existent "training" requirements for legally carrying concealed, having expressed my opinion previously, elsewhere. To the OP's point, my wallet with Drivers License, CCW, credit and other cards, keeps growing past its already prodigious bulk, and is uncomfortable and awkward to carry in many forms of garb that simply don't accommodate it very well.

As a work-around, I have acquired (at Sportsmens Warehouse, or REI, or some such place) a very small "wallet" with two zippered compartments just large enough to hold a couple of "standard" size credit/debit cards, folded up currency, my hunting licenses and big game permit tags, a key to my truck, and, a duplicate copy of my Drivers License, which I obtained from AZ DMV by simply requesting it, (averring that the original had been "lost", which didn't preclude it from being later "found"). To these few and absolutely necessary items, I've added a high quality, full color, protectively laminated, copy of my CCW, which at least shows that I've been issued a CCW.

This little wallet is only a fraction of the bulk of my "every day carry" wallet, and easily fits into a shirt vs. pants pocket, a significant consideration for anyone such as me who may end up wading while messing around in small boats. It is otherwise easy to carry in almost any garment with pockets of any sort, or, tossed into a fanny pack or etc., and thus easy to have handy, if need be.
